A very unusual thing happened today… I had a gap in my diary.

Even more unusual? Mel had exactly the same gap in hers.

So naturally, we took it as a sign. šŸ˜„

As many of my patients know, over the last year I’ve noticed more changes in my own skin, particularly through my neck and dĆ©colletage. I’ve always been pretty diligent with my face skincare, but if I’m being honest, my neck and dĆ©colletage haven’t received quite the same level of love.

Today I had DermaV on my dƩcolletƩ and LaseMD Ultra on my face and neck, along with a few extra spot treatments on some solar lentigines (those little sun spots many of us collect over time).

I’ve also been working through a separate skin-quality protocol for my neck (I’m currently 2 treatments into a series of 3), and as a little bonus while I was numb, Dr Kate performed a skin-hydration treatment on my face.

I’ll share my recovery, downtime, and progress over the coming days and weeks because I know many of you are curious about what these treatments actually look like in real life.

For now, it’s a little red, a little warm, and definitely time for plenty of and sun protection.

Collagen changes are part of skin ageing, but understanding them helps us care for the skin more intelligently.

From early adulthood, the skin’s ability to replenish collagen gradually slows, often estimated at around 1–1.5% per year. As you move through perimenopause and the menopause transition, collagen changes may become more noticeable. Some studies report up to 30% collagen loss in the first five years after menopause, when oestrogen levels have declined more significantly.

What can that look like?

Skin may feel less firm, less elastic, less supported, or not quite as resilient as it once was. You may notice changes in texture, hydration, fine lines, or that feeling that the skin is not ā€œholdingā€ in quite the same way.

This is why I talk so much about skin health, not perfection.

Healthy skin for your age is skin that functions well with a strong barrier, good hydration, resilience, and support.

Good skin is not about looking different.
It’s about understanding what your skin needs and making considered, clinically appropriate choices over time.

Healthy skin isn’t about looking younger.

In Australia, many of us have lived with high UV exposure simply through daily life, not necessarily from ā€œsun worshippingā€, but from school runs, sport, work, driving, walking, gardening, and being outdoors.

Australia has some of the highest UV levels in the world, and over time, that exposure can affect the way skin looks, feels, and functions.

So the conversation isn’t about turning back time.

It’s about supporting skin health, hydration, texture, and quality; helping skin function as well as possible for your age.

Some treatment approaches use ingredients that support the skin’s natural structure, including amino acids and hydration, as part of an individualised skin plan.

Ageing well isn’t about chasing younger.

It’s about caring for your skin, exactly where you are.

Skin is more than what you see on the surface.

It is an organ with structure, function, and support systems including the skin barrier, hydration, collagen, elastin, blood supply, and connective tissue.

When skin is functioning well, it tends to look calm, hydrated, resilient, and supported. When it isn’t, you may start to notice dryness, texture changes, dullness, reduced firmness, or that feeling that the skin is not holding itself quite the same way.

This is why I always come back to skin health first.

Good skin for your age is not about perfection.
It’s about understanding what your skin needs, supporting its function, and making considered choices over time.

Consultations are always guided by assessment, education, clinical suitability, and your individual skin.

Hyaluronic acid.
You’ve heard the name — but what does it actually do?

Hyaluronic acid (HA) is a substance your body naturally produces.

It’s found in your skin, your joints, your connective tissue.

Its superpower?
It binds water.

One molecule of HA can hold up to 1,000 times its weight in water. That’s not marketing — that’s physiology.

In the skin, hyaluronic acid:

• Helps maintain hydration
• Supports elasticity and bounce
• Assists with resilience and repair
• Contributes to that light-reflecting, healthy appearance

Here’s the part that matters.

From our mid-20s onward, natural hyaluronic acid levels gradually decline. Add North Queensland UV exposure, heat, air-conditioning and environmental stress — and that decline can accelerate.

When HA reduces, skin may feel:

• Drier
• Thinner
• Less elastic
• More reactive

This isn’t about chasing youth.
It’s about understanding skin function.

Hydration isn’t just topical. It’s structural.
It’s about how well your skin can attract and retain water within its framework.

Healthy ageing isn’t accidental — it’s supported.

Always evidence-based.
Always individualised.
Always in person.

The face is supported by more than what we see on the surface.
Beneath the skin lies a layered structure of fat pads, connective tissue, fascia and collagen networks — each influencing shape, contour and expression.

With time, these deeper layers can naturally change.
Hydration shifts, tissues soften, and volume gradually redistributes.
This can show up as a sense of tiredness in the features, or a subtle change in how the face feels at rest.

In clinic, the approach is gentle and considered — focusing on supporting tissue quality and harmony, rather than aiming for noticeable change.
The goal is always subtlety: soft, gradual, and natural-looking results that feel like you.

If you’re curious to explore supportive facial rejuvenation in a calm, thoughtful setting, you’re welcome to book a personal consultation.

Facial support begins beneath the surface✨

✨ I’m going on a little hair journey! ✨

For those who don’t know me — I’m Shona, a Registered Nurse at Northern Skin, specialising in cosmetic injectables.

I’ve always had fine hair (thanks genetics šŸ˜…), but over time I’ve noticed more thinning. A couple of years ago, I jumped on the treatment table and had two PRP sessions — not the full course, but even that gave me amazing results.

Now, with some exciting new things coming to Northern Skin šŸ‘€, I’ve decided to do it properly this time and document the process.

šŸ’‰ Last Friday was my first PRP session — and there’s more to come!
Follow along if you’re curious about real results and what the process looks like.
