Bringing Awareness to Hairdressing Burnout and Mental Health

COVID was the most challenging period in my business, but the weeks that followed our reopening proved to be just as difficult, if not more so.
The exhaustion took a significant toll on me. Emotionally, I had to deal with the loss of many long-term clients, some of whom I never expected to lose. It left me feeling shocked and disheartened.
To which I made the tough decision to scale down my business to work in a different industry where I thought Id find a slower pace and avoid burnout.
Unfortunately I experienced a lot of hostility stepping away to take care of myself.

There’s an important truth that’s often overlooked:
The emotional impact of being a hairdresser.
We’re expected to be upbeat, engaging, and creative at all times, delivering perfect results while often acting as a source of support for our clients, even when we are facing our own struggles. Many hairdressers end up grappling with mental health issues that often go unnoticed and, unfortunately, unaddressed.
It hurts when we lose a client we valued beyond just their business or when someone simply doesn’t show up for their appointment and cuts off communication.
We feel the pain of losing long-term clients without understanding why.
Being in one of the lowest-paid trades, hearing that we are too expensive can also make us feel undervalued and disrespected.

The last 2 years have been incredibly tough. While I share some of my challenges with you, I often choose to keep my deeper struggles to myself, trying to stay positive amid the trials life brings,and as most of you know my physical health and mental health took a beating last year, and on top had the decline of my beloved dog snow who I said goodbye to.

In my nearly nine years in business, I have never felt as down or as sad as I do today—with another loss, and another setback. But I will get back up, I will try again, and I will smile again.
Like all hairdressers, I am driven by my passion for this profession and the joy of making you feel beautiful, even when I face challenges myself.

While we find fulfillment in our work, let’s not forget that hairdressers don’t earn significant profits; yet we show up and we try our best evertime we step on the salon floor.
