Our Arnica Ointment is traditionally prepared in small batches using Arnica montana and Yarrow, infused into extra virgin olive oil and finished with natural beeswax.

Some lessons stay with you forever.

Ten years ago I spent a week in Melbourne attending an intensive herbal medicine course with renowned American herbalist Matthew Wood.

I came away with pages of notes and learned more than I could possibly remember.

But one comment has stayed with me all these years.

When speaking about Calendula, Matthew described it as “the herb for where the sun doesn’t shine” and for cuts that are red, inflamed and look like a cat scratch.

It’s one of those wonderfully memorable ways experienced herbalists teach—linking the character of a plant to the situations where it has traditionally been used.

Even after a decade, every time I make a batch Calendula Ointment, those words come back to me.

It’s still one of my favourite herbs and one I keep close at hand. Traditionally used in herbal medicine for minor cuts, burns, abrasions and nappy rash, Calendula has earned its place as a true apothecary staple.

It’s funny how, after all these years, it’s often the smallest comments that leave the biggest impression.
