Supporting the people who support someone with BPD

19/08/2026

💜 WEDNESDAY REFLECTION

When you love someone who struggles with intense emotions, it can be easy to become so focused on how they are feeling that you stop checking in with yourself.

So today, I want to ask about you.

What is something you wish you had understood earlier about loving someone with BPD?

Maybe it’s something you learned about boundaries.

Maybe you realised you can't always fix things.

Maybe you learned not to take every emotional reaction personally.

Or maybe you're still figuring it all out.

There’s no perfect answer here. 💜

If you feel comfortable, share yours below.

Someone else in this community might really need to hear it today.

💜 BPD Explained Simply: Splitting

One moment, you may feel like the safest person in the world.

Then suddenly, after hurt, fear or perceived rejection, it can feel like everything has changed.

This can be incredibly confusing for loved ones.

Splitting can make it difficult for someone with BPD to hold both the good and the difficult parts of a relationship in mind at the same time — especially when emotions are intense.

Understanding what’s happening can help us respond with more compassion.

But remember:

💜 Understanding doesn’t mean excusing hurtful behaviour.
💜 Compassion doesn’t require abandoning your boundaries.
💜 You can care about their pain while protecting your own wellbeing.

Both things can be true.

💜 MYTH VS FACT: BPD

MYTH:
“People with BPD are just being manipulative when they have an intense emotional reaction.”

FACT:
What looks like manipulation from the outside can sometimes be a person desperately trying to cope with overwhelming emotions, fear of abandonment, or feeling unsafe in a relationship.

That doesn’t mean hurtful behaviour should be ignored or excused.

✨ Understanding the reason behind a behaviour and setting a boundary around that behaviour can exist at the same time.

You can have compassion for what someone is experiencing without accepting behaviour that harms you.

For loved ones, that balance can be incredibly difficult.

You are allowed to say:

💜 “I understand that you're hurting, and I still need to protect my wellbeing.”

Both things can be true.

💜 MYTH vs FACT: BPD

What looks like manipulation from the outside may actually be someone struggling with emotions that feel completely overwhelming.

Understanding why a behaviour happens doesn’t mean you have to accept behaviour that hurts you.

Compassion and boundaries can exist together. 💜

You can care about their pain and protect your own wellbeing.

✨ Both things can be true.

When things get tough... make the moment smaller. 💜

Supporting someone with BPD can be emotionally exhausting.

Some days it may feel like you're walking on eggshells. Other days you might wonder if anything you do is helping.

When everything feels overwhelming, don't try to carry tomorrow as well.

Instead, make the moment smaller.

✨ Take one slow breath.
✨ Drink a glass of water.
✨ Step outside for five minutes.
✨ Text someone you trust.
✨ Remind yourself: "I don't have to solve everything today."

You don't have to fix every crisis.
You don't have to carry every emotion.
You don't have to have all the answers.

Sometimes the bravest thing you can do is focus on the next small step.

Supporting someone else starts with supporting yourself too.

Progress isn't measured by perfect days. Sometimes it's simply choosing to keep showing up—one moment at a time.

Be gentle with yourself today. You're doing more than you realise. 💜

Boundaries aren't walls. They're doors with locks.

Loving someone with BPD doesn't mean sacrificing your own wellbeing.

Healthy boundaries aren't about punishment, control, or rejection. They're about protecting your peace while still treating the other person with kindness and respect.

You can be compassionate and say no.
You can love someone and choose not to accept harmful behaviour.
You can care deeply without losing yourself.

Boundaries aren't selfish.
They're how relationships become healthier and more sustainable—for everyone involved. 💙

✨ What's one boundary you've learned to protect, even when it felt difficult?

💙 A Gentle Reminder for Friday 💙

If this week has been heavy, you're allowed to put it down for a little while.

Loving someone with BPD can be deeply meaningful... and incredibly exhausting. There are moments of connection, moments of confusion, and moments where you question whether you're doing enough.

You don't have to have all the answers today.

You don't have to fix everything before the weekend begins.

Take a deep breath. Drink some water. Step outside for a few minutes if you can. Read a chapter of that book. Watch something that makes you laugh. Sit in the quiet without feeling guilty.

Looking after yourself isn't abandoning someone else. It's making sure you still have something left to give tomorrow.

Wherever you are on your journey, I hope you find at least one small moment of peace this weekend.

You've made it through another week. That's enough. 💙

✨ What's one small thing you'll do for yourself this weekend? Share it below—you might inspire someone else.

💜 "I am not responsible for other people's happiness."

This can be one of the hardest lessons to learn when you love someone who struggles with intense emotions.

Many of us become experts at fixing, rescuing, reassuring, and carrying the emotional weight of everyone around us. We convince ourselves that if we just say the right thing, do the right thing, or love hard enough, we can prevent someone else's pain.

But the truth is:

You can care deeply about someone without being responsible for their feelings.

You can offer support without sacrificing yourself.

You can love someone and still have boundaries.

Healthy boundaries are not walls.
They are not punishment.
They are not abandonment.

They are the line between compassion and self-abandonment.

You are responsible for your actions, your words, and your choices.

You are not responsible for managing another person's emotions, reactions, or happiness.

Sometimes the most loving thing you can do—for them and for yourself—is to step back from the role of emotional caretaker and simply be present.

💜 Caring doesn't require carrying.

If this is something you're learning too, you're not alone.

What boundary have you learned that has protected your peace while still allowing you to care for someone you love? 💜
