Many times we underestimate the amount of dirt, grime and dead skin on our pillowcases. Each day of sleep leaves microbial dead skin debris on our pillowcases, and if we do not have a morning and evening daily skin care routine, that also leaves sebum, sweat, bacteria and environmental pollutants that sits on our skin on the pillowcases, which can make conditions like acne and skin inflammation worsen.

It is recommended that pillowcases should be changed and washed at least once a week and every two to three days for optimal hygiene, especially for people with sensitive skin or acne to prevent the buildup of bacteria.

Dirty pillowcases can lead to clogged up pores and skin irritation. So it's best to have them changed and washed regularly to help optimize the effectiveness of our daily skin care routine and hygiene.

The Role of Sleep in Skin Health

The role of sleep in having and maintaining a healthy skin cannot be overemphasized. During sleep, all the cells in our body renew themselves and regenerate at an accelerated pace; our skin cells inclusive.

If we don't have sufficient sleep, it not only affects our bodily function, but it affects our skin function as well. As you feel lethargic from not having a good night's rest, your skin feels tired as well, because your brain wasn't able to rest properly, the rest of the cells in your body cannot function at their optimum level.

Our bodies are biological machines and it's designed to "work-rest-work-rest" in that order. If that order isn't maintained, especially for a prolonged period of time, it starts to break down and deteriorate. Lack of quality sleep results in lack of healthy skin, as the skin may begin to age faster, may get excessively oily, deplete in water content, have more breakouts, and the list can go on and on and on, because without quality sleep, the skin which is our largest organ can become erratic in it's function, leading to premature skin ageing and other skin disorders.

Prioritizing sleep should be part of our daily lifestyle ethos, as "beauty sleep" is not a myth, but very real and not just helps to heal our skin, but our mind, body and soul. Not just how long we sleep, but how well we sleep; the quality of sleep.

Let's talk about Elastin today; it's structure, function and how it helps to keep the skin in tip top shape, or maybe not.

As the name implies, Elastin Fibers are stretchy in nature and have the ability to return to their original shape due to their elastic structure, but over time due to wear and tear, the level at which they return to shape decreases resulting in loss of firmness and tone of skin.

As we age, our skin ages too and these fibers are not as vibrant and do not have the kind of vigour our young skin had. How we care for our skin matters. Factors like UV exposure, smoking, poor diet, insufficient sleep, to mention a few, all play a significant role in the structure and function of how Elastin Fibers stay active.

Making deliberate effort to combat the degradation of these fibers cannot be overemphasized.

4 years ago as the Resident Skin Specialist in a 5 Star Resort in the Maldives.

My journey has been that of growth; personally and professionally, of unlearning, relearning and admitting that despite all I know, based on my qualifications, exposure and experience; I realize I know nothing.

I read something today which resonated so well with me. It reads;

1. Learning new things will make you feel dumb, when it's actually making you smarter.
2. Investing in yourself will make you feel broke, when it's actually making you rich.
3. Facing your fears will make you feel terrified, when it's actually making you braver.

My advice; always be open to learning. No man is an island of knowledge.

Anyone who knows me knows I'm always excited about training and self development.

ยฐ Read a book.
ยฐ Learn a new skill.
ยฐ Try your hands on art.
ยฐ Learn a new language.
ยฐ Show interest in other people's culture.
ยฐ Practice journaling.
ยฐ Dream, and dream big.
ยฐ Sleep. Yes, sleep.
ยฐ Move your body; walk.
ยฐ Reduce screen time.

You will look back in a few years and be glad you didn't do it any other way. Trust me ๐Ÿ˜Š

Wise nuggets from yours truly ๐Ÿ˜‰
