I’ve tried many viral makeup setting sprays, and here’s my honest opinion 👉

A setting spray works by creating a thin FILM on the skin, because all of those sprays contain film-forming polymers.
These are the same type of materials used in hairspray and nail polish binders!
That’s what actually helps makeup last.

The problems:
1. This film can break with friction and skin oil — so you can end up with holes in your makeup during the day.
2. It can feel tight and drying on the skin, especially if your skin is dry or sensitive. Not the most comfortable feeling.

Some classic fixing sprays are very strong — and even smell like hairspray (for example L’Oréal Infallible Fixing Mist and Kryolan Fixing Spray).
I personally never use them on the face, only on the body (décolleté of my brides).

Others, like Charlotte Tilbury Airbrush Flawless Setting Spray, feel more hydrating —
but I didn’t see a strong fixing effect from them either. So why pay so much?

Setting sprays with SPF (like Givenchy Prisme Libre Prep & Set Glow Mist SPF) can even start dissolving makeup instead of holding it in place.

So no — setting spray is not a miracle product.

In many cases, it’s better to either skip it or choose setting sprays with more hydrating, skin-friendly ingredients and no alcohol in it.
Yes, modern formulas are evolving, and newer sprays can feel much more comfortable than old-school ones like Kryolan.

Good news: A well-done makeup can last beautifully even without a setting spray👍
It’s more about technique, understanding the logic of makeup application, cosmetic ingredients and products layering.

That’s when you need to call a smart pro makeup artist, if you have a wedding bor another important event where your makeup should be longlasting😉
