GAPS ARE IMPORTANT!

Just like our bodies need rest after a strenuous day at work or after a long marathon to recover, it also needs gaps between meals and drinks, meals and sleep and so on.

This is to ensure that there aren't harmful interactions between these two activities (which mainly relate to consumption of food/nutrients)

Do you practice any of these gaps?

Reach out to me directly if you would like to understand more about why these gaps are important (and ncessary!).

"What is the one piece of Nutrition advice that you would give?"

This is the question I often get asked by people I work with.

I am usually reluctant to offer generic advice as everyone is different. But, when pressed, the one I use most often is the importance of having VARIETY in your diet.

If you do not want to worry about getting all the essential macro and micronutrients in your diet then having a varied diet is the best way forward.

But, it is not easy to implement as it requires careful planning. There are a few practical ways to think about it:

✏ THINK IN TERMS OF SUBSTITUTES: Meal ingredients always can be substituted for another from the same family. E.g. buckwheat, millet, brown rice, quinoa, bulgur are all good substitutes to white rice. Same for oils - walnut, peanut, ghee, coconut, grapeseed should be alternately used with olive oil

✏ SHOP DIFFERENT EACH TIME: Most easily implemented for fruits and vegetables; meat, fish and dairy; bread

✏ DIFFERENT COOKING METHODS: Using a variety of cooking methods such as Baking, steaming, boiling, frying or raw allow for accrual of different benefits from the varied diet. An exclusively raw foods diet challenges your digestive system while exclusively cooking results in greater loss of micronutrients

What do you do straight after your exercise routine?

Some of you may go for the peanut bar, or that protein drink or even a glass of orange juice.

But your digestive system is not working straight after an exercise routine since your sympathetic nervous system is still active (responsible for releasing stress hormones in your body).

Therefore, it is important to have a gap of about 30-45 minutes to allow your parasympathetic nervous system to be active and to get those digestive juices flowing again.

Personally, I just like to use this time to cook a meal which is itself a relaxing activity for me.

The HOW series continues...

Rice, lentils, nuts and dried fruits are part of all our diets to varying extent, but how you prepare them for consumption is crucial in realising the nutritional benefits from these foods.

Soaking these foods in water for about 2-4 hours before consumption has a number of benefits:

➡ Removes phytic acid content of these foods. Termed as 'anti-nutrients' this compound inhibit the release of enzymes in our gut that help in the absorption of proteins and minerals (such as magnesium and zinc) from these foods

➡ Nuts are nutrient dense foods and not easy to digest. Soaking fills them with moisture that helps in ease of digestion and absorption of nutrients

➡ Soaking also has the effect of reducing pesticides or insecticides that may have been sprayed on these foods

Comment with any food cooking methods that you use to preserve nutritional value of foods.

The HOW of Hydration

Hydration is one of the most important things we do daily from a health perspective, but it is not enough to have enough fluids (more on quantity of fluids below), but also important to do it the right way!

In addition to the instructions in the video a few more HOW's and WHEN's

➡ HAVING a glass of luke warm water first thing in the morning encourages bowel movements. Start with a glass of 200ml and gradually increase to 500ml over a period of 1 month

➡ DO NOT consume more than a glass of 200ml water with meals as it may cause indigestion

➡ DRINKING fluids less than 40 mins before meals may dilute digestive juices and less than 40 mins after meals may cause indigestion

➡ DO NOT drink more than 1.5-2L of fluids on a daily basis. This includes tea, coffees and thin soups but not alcohol. Can adjust a little higher if in hot weather or under a heavy exercise routine

➡ Adding a squeeze of lemon, a pinch of salt or a dash of syrup/squash helps with retaining fluids in the body

Comment with what works for you or the challenges you face with your hydration practices.

There is a tendency to equate Nutrition with Diet, which is essentially what we put into our mouths.

As a nutritionist I think the HOW and WHEN of diet and lifestyle are equally important. These are small tips and tricks that help in efficient absorption of what we eat, and elimination of unwanted products, among other benefits.

There is a trend to make the practice of nutritional therapy glamorous, with colourful recipes and cooking workshops, but ultimately these are not sustainable. Good habits, however, are sustainable.

In this series of videos, I will share some small tips and tricks that I learned from my elders while growing up and that has helped me maintain good health. I hope it can do the same for you.

Do not hesitate to reach out to me if you have any questions!

Far too often we get pre-occupied with what changes we should bring in our diet, or how much fluids we should be drinking, at the expense of the Process (the HOW) and the Timing of (the WHEN) of our diet. Equally important are questions of efficient absorption of nutrients and elimination of waste products.

While the diet remains an essential part of nutrition advice, it is equally important to think of these lifestyle questions that is important to achieve overall good health.

Onwards and upwards!

Excited to have my flyers printed to spread the word about my offer and my working philosophy, so don't be surprised if you find them in establishments around St Gilles, Ixelles and Forest.

But I am also available for online consultations for those not in these areas or not in Brussels altogether.

Remember, I offer an initial free 30 mins chat to anyone who would (with no strings attached), well, like to have a chat about Naturopathic Nutrition or any other questions.

While growing up in India I was exposed to a lot of natural, home-made therapies that were rooted in the experience of my elders. These, I realised, are also aligned with the principles of naturopathic nutrition. I intend to use these practices to help clients achieve positive and sustainable health outcomes.

I believe that educating oneself about their own health is the best tool to motivate the person to take action against ill-health. This ensures that people I work with have the necessary tools to understand how their body works and take necessary action without always seeking external help.
