Today, the research team at Smartbleach International (SBI) is setting yet another milestone: the first ever light-stimulated in-office tooth whitening system with only 6% hydrogen peroxide. As of November 1st 2012, new European regulations dictate that the use of the main active ingredient for tooth whitening, i.e. This concentration is much too low for conventional power bleaching systems (i.e. other light-stimulated in-office tooth whitening system) to be efficient. Scientists at Smartbleach International (SBI) were able to alter the chemistry of the bleaching gel in such a way that the photo-dynamic reactions create hydroxyl radicals and singlet oxygen (the two most powerful bleaching agents, much stronger than hydrogen peroxide) out of water and oxygen. Smartbleach 3LT is an efficient and fast tooth whitening system. The only safety preparations that have to be taken are placing the bite-block, the lip retractor and the gingival barrier. Interactions between light:
- absorption in water cause heating
- absorption in hydroxyapatite cause drilling

Er:YAG laser and CO2 laser are used for drilling and are concequently very bad for tooth whitening

Blue lamps, Diode laser and Nd:YAG laser induce heat which enhanced tooth whitening. Heat can however cause for tooth damage and sensitivity.

KTP laser and SmartLight 3LT do not cause heating or drilling and are thus very safe to use on a tooth. When used with the Smartbleach Gel it induces photo-dynamic reactions that create very potent reactive oxygen species that strongly enhance tooth whitening. This is definetly the safest option for tooth whitening.
