Born in Massachusetts, William Wegman is currently one of America’s best-known photographers, but he’d first intended to pursue a painting career. He studied art in both his homestate and in Illinois, and was teaching in Long Beach, California, when he found his calling. It was the early 1970s, and Wegman had just acquired a Weimaraner whom he named “Man Ray” after the famous photographer. The first photos of Man Ray were simple studio shots, with compositions ranging Man Ray contemplating a bust of himself to the dog sitting on stools.
Wegman upped the dog-photography ante in the years that followed, as he photographed Man Ray in peculiar positions; dressed up like a businessman, a farmer, a dinosaur; posed with other animals, adults, and children. Man Ray became such a photography fixture that “The Village Voice” named him their “Man of the Year” in 1983 (the year following the dog’s death). Wegman also had another dog-model, whom he called “Fay Ray” (after the legendary scream-queen and “King Kong” actress Fay Wray), and puppies from one of her litters later acted as Wegman’s models.
