Kolkata — A Journey I Never Planned

A sudden trip to Kolkata, planned almost on a whim, turned into one of the most memorable journeys for me and my children.

As a Bengali, this was my first ever trip to Kolkata—and perhaps that is what made it even more special. We spent our days simply roaming around, observing, absorbing and experiencing a city that feels like a living story.

My children were fascinated by the sheer number of people everywhere—people constantly moving, working, struggling, building their lives. Kolkata showed us the reality of hard work, survival and dreams, often existing side by side with striking economic disparity. From extreme poverty to people living incredibly comfortable lives, the contrasts are impossible to miss.

And then there is history. This is a city where so much of India’s freedom movement was shaped. Walking through Kolkata made me think about our freedom fighters, their sacrifices and what freedom truly meant to generations before us.

The city beautifully brings together natural and man-made heritage—from the mighty Ganges to the magnificent Victoria Memorial; from the historic Howrah Bridge to the relatively newer Vidyasagar Setu.

From narrow, chaotic streets to the wide avenues of Salt Lake.
From high-tech malls to tiny roadside shops.
From pothole-filled roads to beautifully maintained stretches.
From grand buildings to humble homes.

And of course, the food
From ilish maach to endless varieties of authentic Bengali cuisine, every meal felt like a little celebration of where we come from.

Kolkata is not perfect—and perhaps that is exactly what makes it real. It is a city of contrasts, history, struggle, culture, resilience and warmth.

We came as visitors, but I left feeling that I had finally met a part of my own Bengali identity that I had never truly known before.

Kolkata, you were unexpected—and unforgettable.
