In a very rare observational study out of Italy which asked participants about their use of fresh herbs, regular consumers of fresh sage were found to have 57% less risk of lung cancer. Sage’s natural is rich in multiple cancer-fighting phytochemicals such as carnosol and rosmarinic acid (found also in rosemary), manool, cineole and thujone. We don’t know which one—or combination—of these compounds is at work in reducing risk so it’s best to get the fresh herb just like the people in the study. As a side benefit, clinical trials have recently shown sage to benefit cognitive function in both healthy adults and those with Alzheimer’s.

Eat your walnuts!

Up until now, researchers have assumed that walnut’s “secret sauce” against cancer was its super-high content of antioxidants, and is why eating three servings (of 28 grams) weekly has been linked to a remarkable 54% reduced risk for overall cancer death in humans. But now we’ve discovered—very surprisingly—that walnut’s proteins also suppress cancer. When exposed to partially digested walnut proteins, human breast cancer cells were slowed in their growth by an amazing 74%. Here’s the great news: walnuts are over 20% protein by weight, meaning that each serving is packed with over 5 grams of cancer-killing plant based protein. So why not double down on the walnuts this Christmas and holiday season? (For those who are able to eat nuts.)

Sprouts...... It's what's for dinner!

Newly Discovered Bean Sprout Peptides Kill 70% of Cancer Cells: For the first time ever, researchers have isolated the peptides from bean sprouts and applied them to cancer cells in a test tube. The peptides were so toxic to human colon cancer cells (CaCo-2) they killed off 70% of them in just 24 hours. The beans (soybeans) had been germinated in the dark for 6 days. Peptides are highly specialized proteins made by plants and animals to carry out a variety of biological functions, including killing viruses and bacteria. Peptides have also shown potent anticancer abilities in several studies. But what’s so special about this study is that the researchers first subjected the peptides to simulated digestion before applying them to the cancer cells. That way, the cancer cells will see a version of the peptides very similar to what our bodies would see after we eat and digest the sprouts. And it appears to reflect reality, because a recent study from India found that people eating sprouts (of any kind) regularly had 50% less risk for colon cancer. Another good reason to eat avocados.

High dietary intakes of the carotenoid lutein are known to reduce the risk for at least eight different cancers. It also improves the health of our eyes and keep our brains sharper as we get older because lutein uniquely accumulates in the eyes and brain, while most other carotenoids do not. Most of our lutein comes from leafy greens like spinach and kale. But avocado is also a good source, and is quite special because the lutein is pre-dissolved in its healthy supply of monounsaturated fat. And that means we absorb lutein from avocado about 600% better than from leafy greens. So do enjoy that avocado on toast for breakfast, or plenty of guacamole as a side with lunch or dinner.
