The smell of a flooded city after a Category 4 hurricane is something you never forget. It’s a suffocating mixture of gasoline, rotting vegetation, and raw sewage, all swirling in pitch-black, toxic water. My name is Elias, a former Coast Guard rescue swimmer, now volunteering for a disaster animal response team. It was 2:00 AM in Plaquemines Parish, Louisiana. The evacuation orders had been mandated days ago, and the streets were completely submerged under eight feet of dark, stagnant water.

I was navigating my flat-bottom aluminum boat through the drowned neighborhood, cutting the outboard motor to avoid submerged cars. The silence was deafening, broken only by the steady, depressing drizzle of rain.

Then, I heard it. A faint, gurgling splash. Slap... splash... gasp.

I swung my high-powered spotlight toward a half-submerged, colonial-style house. The water had reached the top of the front porch. Tied to one of the thick wooden pillars was a heavy steel logging chain. My heart dropped into my stomach as the light traced the chain down into the murky depths.

At the very end of it, barely keeping his nose above the freezing, oily water, was a massive Mastiff mix.

He was completely exhausted. His eyes were rolled back, his jaw trembling violently. He had been treading water for God knows how long—hours, maybe a full day. Every time he stopped paddling, the weight of the thick metal chain pulled his head underwater. He would sink, swallow toxic water, and fight his way back up with a heartbreaking, choking gasp. He was giving up. I could see the light fading from his eyes.

""Hold on! I'm coming!"" I screamed, grabbing my diving knife and plunging over the side of the boat into the toxic, freezing floodwater.

The water was thick with sharp debris. My boots sank into the invisible, muddy bottom. Wading through chest-deep water, I finally reached him. He was a giant dog, easily 100 pounds, but he was completely depleted.

""I got you, buddy,"" I choked out, taking a deep breath and dunking my head under that horrific black water to find the collar and cut him loose.

But the moment I touched his neck, survival instinct overrode his exhaustion. Blinded by panic and the fear of being pulled under again, the massive dog violently thrashed. A hundred pounds of pure muscle exploded in the water. One of his heavy paws struck me square in the jaw, disorienting me.

Before I could recover, the heavy steel chain wrapped around my arm. The dog thrashed again, pushing off my shoulders in a desperate attempt to climb higher. His weight pushed me down.

Suddenly, the dark water rushed over my head. I was tangled in the chain. I couldn't see. I couldn't breathe. My lungs burned as I swallowed a mouthful of gasoline-tasting water, sinking into the pitch-black abyss..."
