Public Health Explained
Disciplines of Public Health
Public health is a multidisciplinary field that encompasses a wide range of disciplines and areas of study.
The core disciplines of public health include:
1. Epidemiology: Epidemiologists study the distribution and determinants of diseases in populations. They investigate outbreaks, identify risk factors, and develop strategies for disease prevention and control.
2. Biostatistics: Biostatisticians use statistical methods to analyze health data, draw conclusions, and make predictions about public health trends. They help design studies and interpret research findings.
3. Social and Behavioral Sciences: Experts in this field examine the social, cultural, and behavioral factors that influence health and health-related behaviors. They develop interventions to promote healthy behaviors and reduce health disparities.
4. Health Policy and Health Economics: This discipline involves the study of healthcare policies, health insurance systems, and the economic aspects of healthcare. Experts in this field help shape health policies and assess their impact.
5. Community Health: Community health specialists work at the grassroots level to promote health and prevent diseases within specific communities. They often collaborate with local organizations and community leaders.
6. Maternal and Child Health: This area of public health focuses on the health and well-being of mothers and children, including prenatal care, child development, and family planning.
7. Infectious Disease Control: Specialists in this field work to prevent, control, and manage infectious diseases such as HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis, and emerging infectious diseases.
In Conclusion: "Public Health disciplines form a powerful network of professionals working tirelessly to ensure the health and wellness of our communities. Together, they create a healthier, happier world for all."

Public Health Fraternity in Botswana is faced with enormous challenges for quite some time now. Challenges range from diminished employment opportunities, apparent invasion of Public Health Space by professionals from other cadres which links with the feeling of taking away our job by graduates. All this challenges has left graduates wondering whether it was a good idea to study Public Health in the first place. Amongst all this, it is important that we draft the scope of practice for Public Health which will help control invasion of Public Health Space by professionals from other cadres. This can happen only if all Public Health Professionals can unite to mitigate all challenges. Our Profession is losing its value slowly. Time to act! we have been talking and complaining about this challenges in our own spaces but it is time to unite and find possible solutions to this issues.
