Ever feel like you start the journey to lighter hair and hear, “It’s a process, or "it takes time”? Or wonder why your hair always seems to fade warm?
Here’s why:

Lightening your hair involves breaking disulfide bonds, these are the permanent protein bonds that give hair its strength and structure.

An alkaline product like lightener or permanent color opens the cuticle, allowing hydrogen peroxide to pe*****te the cortex.
Once inside, hydrogen peroxide targets the pigment molecules in your hair, disrupting them and making them less visible.

Dark hair, such as brown or black, contains mostly eumelanin (brown/black pigment) but also pheomelanin (red/yellow pigment). The darker the hair, the more pigment molecules there are to break down before reaching a lighter result.
As those darker pigments are removed, the underlying warmth is revealed: • Level 5: Red underlying pigment • Level 6: Red-orange • Level 7: Orange • Level 8: Yellow-orange • Level 9: Yellow

Those same disulfide bonds we break during the lightening process are also responsible for your hair’s strength, shape, and structure.
Healthy structure is essential for maintaining strength, elasticity, and length. Bond builders like Olaplex can help repair broken bonds during a color service, but they cannot prevent over-processing or replace bonds that are continually broken faster than they can be repaired.

When hair is pushed beyond its limit, it loses strength and elasticity, and the cuticle can no longer properly retain color or moisture.
That’s why corrective color and major lightening services need to be approached slowly. Hair has a natural stopping point in each session, and pushing past that point won’t produce better results, it will only compromise the integrity of your hair.

It's been blonde season lately, and I'm here for it!

Just after her 33rd birthday, Emilyy was diagnosed with stage three uterine leiomyosarcoma that has since progressed to stage four. This rare cancer affects roughly 6 in every 1,000,000 women, with a median age around 60 years old. She has undergone multiple rounds of chemotherapy and multiple surgeries. Next week, Emilyy will be starting 6 rounds of an experimental new chemotherapy that is not covered by Alberta Health, with each round costing up to $10,000.

If you know Emilyy, you know the bright smile and the heart that gives and gives and gives. We know it is our turn to give that energy back to her and we are excited to have the chance to work with our community to support this wonderful girl on June 28th!
