McRitchie first honouree under new Airdrie street naming policy
After 25 years without an update, Airdrie’s street naming rules are getting a major overhaul to better recognize community contributors and streamline future developments.
A unanimous vote by Airdrie City Council this week has paved the way for the first honorary street renaming in the city’s recent history, with former Airdrie Food Bank executive director Lori McRitchie being the first recipient under the new policy.
During a regular meeting on May 19, the Airdrie City Council unanimously approved the Street Naming Policy to add policies guiding honorary street naming requests which repeals Street Naming Policy P-09/2001.
The proposed Street Naming Policy includes new guidance for honorary street naming; streamlined guidance for naming new streets; clarified process for street renaming; and alignment with current council policy format.
The new policy has a provision about the requirement for applying for honorary street, which regulates the requirements of public engagement during the application review process.
That said, the landowners living in the proposed honorary street will be notified, and the proposed honorary street naming will also be advertised in a newspaper to provide the interest party with an opportunity to provide comments to administration and council.
"Subsecion 21 is the provision to require the assignment of an honorary street names does not change the official name of the street," Planner II, Strategic Growth and Investment Alex Wang said.
"The new street naming policies turn from a true request," he added.
On June 3, 2025, Council approved a request submitted by the Airdrie Food Bank, which asked to rename East Lake Way in recognition of the organization’s former Executive Director, Lori McRitchie, as an expression of appreciation for her long standing contributions to the community.
According to Wang, every city identifies the long-term vision that emphasize liability as a core planning outcome, which focuses on strengthening the quality of social interaction through neighbourhood identity, pride, and a shared sense of place.
The existing Street Naming Policy is approximately 25 years old, and it does not mention the option for honorary street naming.
Therefore, last year on June 3, 2025, council directed administration to return to council with amendments to Street Naming Policy P-9/2001, to include policies to guide decision making on honorary name changes.
Coun. Kristen Shima was curious to learn more about the street names which does not need to be in English.
"Can you provide an example what that may look like, I don't believe we've had an example in Airdrie," Shima asked.
As per the policy, it can be eligible if it meets the requirements such as if it is being easy enough to understand by emergency response and any other concerns that might arise, Team Leader Jordan Furness said.
"I am not actually aware of it being an example in Airdrie at this time," Furness added.
As far as the cost to renaming streets is considered, Wang clarified that there is a $840 fee associated to the official name change of a street.
