Here’s a quick history lesson for you all, did you know that the patron saint of Ireland wasn't actually Irish? He was from Roman Britain and was kidnapped and brought to Ireland as a slave. He ended up escaping at 16 and then later came back to Ireland to teach about Catholicism and Christianity! The day was first established in 1631 as a modest religious holiday, and honoring Ireland's patron saint. Because it fell right in the middle of Lent, people began using it as a reason to celebrate and take a break from the restraints and abstinence of the period leading up to Easter. However, it didn't actually become a public holiday in Ireland until 1904! I won’t bore you with much more, but thanks to all the Irish immigrants who migrated over to North & South America who continued to make it a holiday over here!⁣
