“Smoker’s lines,” also known as “lip lines” or “perioral lines,” are the fine, vertical wrinkles that appear around the mouth. These lines are commonly associated with smoking, but they can develop due to a variety of factors, such as aging, genetics, sun exposure, and repetitive facial expressions (like pursing the lips).

Causes of Smoker’s Lines

1. Aging: As skin ages, collagen and elastin—the proteins that give skin structure and elasticity—decrease, leading to thinner, less firm skin.
2. Sun Exposure: UV rays can accelerate collagen breakdown, making the skin around the mouth more prone to wrinkling.
3. Smoking: The repetitive action of pursing the lips to smoke, along with nicotine’s impact on blood flow and collagen, contributes to wrinkle formation.
4. Genetics: Skin type and genetic factors influence wrinkle development and may make some people more susceptible to fine lines.

Injectable Fillers: Hyaluronic acid fillers can be injected into the lines to help smooth them out and soften their appearance.

I carefully placed 0.5 mls of Stylage above the upper and lower lip to smooth the deep wrinkles without causing any puffiness. I also placed a small amount of filler to the marionette lines to help create balance and support.

Overall, she was very happy with her results.
