The last few minutes of an appointment are never rushed.
This is where I slow down.
Every curl is brushed with intention.
Every section is refined.
Every detail is considered.
Because the final presentation should reflect the standard of work that came before it.
Split ends don’t heal.
Once the hair shaft has split, it can’t fuse itself back together.
The longer it’s left, the further that split can travel up the strand, leading to more breakage, thinner ends, and a haircut that never quite feels healthy.
That’s why I’m such an advocate for regular maintenance trims.
They’re not about taking off length for the sake of it.
They’re about protecting the length you’ve worked so hard to grow.
Healthy hair isn’t just about the products you use.
Sometimes it’s about knowing what needs to stay and what needs to go.
My haircut isn’t finished when I put the scissors down the first time.
I establish the shape while the hair is dry, wash and style it, and then go back in to refine the final result.
Once the hair is dry, I can see the individual split ends that need to come off, where the hair is carrying weight, and exactly how much density I’m removing.
When the hair is wet, everything clumps together. Those details are much harder to evaluate.
The first haircut creates the foundation. The second refines it.
Different techniques serve different purposes, but understanding when to use each one is what makes you a stronger stylist.
One of my favourite parts of teaching is breaking down the little details that create more predictable results.
It’s rarely one big technique that changes everything, it’s learning to see the small things differently.

There are a lot of ways to run a salon.
None of this is about being the “right” way, but it is the way I’ve chosen to lead Sage + Pine.
I’ve never wanted to build a business where chaos was mistaken for success. I wanted to build a place where artists can have full books, do exceptional work, and still leave with something left for themselves. A place where artists feel supported, clients feel genuinely cared for, and success doesn’t have to come at the expense of someone’s wellbeing.
That means making decisions that don’t always prioritize short-term revenue, but build something stronger in the long term.
A culture where questions are encouraged.
Standards are clear.
Growth is intentional.
People are respected.
And everyone knows what we’re working toward together.
Leadership isn’t about having all the answers.
It’s about creating an environment where people can do their best work.
These are a few of the principles that guide every decision I make inside these four walls.

One of the biggest shifts in my career was moving away from thinking about individual services and instead asking, “What outcome am I trying to achieve?”
When the outcome is clear, every decision becomes more intentional.
A root touch-up isn’t just maintenance.
A gloss isn’t just added shine.
Extension maintenance isn’t just moving hair up.
Each service exists to support one cohesive result.
When we stop viewing appointments as a checklist of services and start designing them around the outcome, our consultations become clearer, our decision-making becomes more purposeful, and our clients experience more consistency.
Technique matters.
But intentionality is what ties it all together.
