Dissecting Anatomy 101: The Scalenes.
Hello, for those who don’t know me, my name is Jacquelin or Jac. I am a co-owner/ RMT here at Cerebro-Myo.
I wanted to talk about this group of muscles that can be problematic, the scalenes. The scalenes are a group of three muscles that attach from the transverse process of the spine down to the 1st and 2nd rib. The scalene muscles are know to be an accessory muscle aiding in respiration. Here at the clinic we find the scalene muscles can be tight due to forward head posture, apical breathing and weakened deep neck flexor muscles. (Wink, wink desk people).
What can you do to help strengthen and relax your scalene muscles?
🔸 Look to strengthen your deep neck flexors (longus colli). Strengthening this muscle can help to stabilize the vertebrae from translating forward which will take the strain off the scalenes muscles.
🔸 Postural awareness is key! Forward head posture (Tech Neck) is not conducive to over all cervical and thoracic spine health. Our bone form a foundation that has to be strong and in the correct position to utilize the muscles to their full potential.
🔸 Share the load. When it comes to sore muscles people often believe it is because a muscle is shortened, or tight, but actually could be weak and lengthened. You must look to find a balanced ratio between strengthening and lengthening when considering the anatomy surrounding your C Spine.
