What is the difference between true sciatica and piriformis syndrome?
The condition of sciatica stems from the lumbar spine where the sciatic nerve is compromised at the lumbar level of the spine from a herniated disc AKA as lumbar radiculopathy.
Piriformis syndrome stems from the piriformis muscle itself located DEEP in the buttock muscle underneath the well known gluteus maximum muscle. Depending on the individuals anatomy the sciatic nerve can run under the piriformis muscle or directly through the piriformis muscle and can cause compression of the sciatic nerve exacerbating sciatic nerve symptoms.
Massage therapy, acupuncture and proper stretching can help ease symptoms of either condition.

Cupping is best described as negative pressure massage. When the cup is applied it creates space within the tissues thereby enabling more movement of blood and lymph at the local site.
Cupping can be beneficial for arthritic pain, stomach ache and indigestion, headache, low back pain, scar treatment, edema and swelling and general aches and pains.
Successful cupping can be achieved by three different depths...
1. superficial/light
2. medium
3. deep
There is some controversy around cupping and the marks it can leave on the skin. The different variations in colour actually tell us a lot about what is going on beneath the surface.
For example:
Bright purple: recent blood stagnation possibly from a recent strain causing limited blood flow
Bright red: injury with active inflammation
Pale red: indicates tissue injury with poor blood circulation and possible fascial adhesions/restrictions
White or mottled: severe lack of circulation likely from scar tissue
