What is Cupping therapy?
Cupping is a traditional Chinese medicine practice utilized by RMT’s and other health practitioners. We use plastic or silicone cups to suck the air out of the cup and create a seal on the tissue. This pulls the tissue into the cup, creating a suction effect on the tissue.
How is this effective?
The suction of the cup and the pull of the tissue aids in recovery by breaking down fascial adhesions, bringing blood flow into the area, helps relieve inflammation symptoms, and relaxes the applicable muscles where the cups are applied. The cups also provide a nice relaxation effect during the treatment.
How long is the treatment?
Cupping alone is something that is not very time consuming. We would use the cups on the area for 3 to 5 minutes and then proceed with a more traditional style of massage to realign the muscle fibres. A good cupping session could be done in 30 minutes or less, but I recommend a 45-minute treatment to have the time to apply the cups properly and perform the rest of the treatment, including functional exercises to incorporate the new movement potential.
When should you not use cupping?
Cupping should be avoided if you have a chronic pain condition or increased tissue sensitivity. Cupping should also be avoided if you have a skin condition in the area being treated. It should also be noted that cupping creates large, circular bruises that are very noticeable and tend to subside between 7 to 10 days after the appointment. These bruises are usually just aesthetic marks but I would recommend avoiding cupping if you have an event that would have those areas of the body exposed.
Overall, cupping is a very effective treatment method and can positively impact your recovery. If you are interested in cupping therapy, make an appointment with me and we can incorporate it into your treatment plans.
