Someone vandalized the Gabriola Island Petroglyphs.

Basically, ancient Indigenous rock carvings at Sandwell Provincial Park on Gabriola Island got messed up with scratched-in graffiti. A local, Catherine Thompson, found it in mid-July.

Everyone in the community was pretty sad and mad about it. People talked about putting up fences or cameras, but Thompson thinks we should focus on educating people. She figures the person who did it might not have even known they were messing with a sacred site because the island's 80+ petroglyphs blend in so well.

The Ministry of Forests was bummed out, saying these petroglyphs are protected by the Heritage Conservation Act. Messing with these sites can get you in serious trouble, like fines up to $50,000 or even two years in jail. The Archaeology Branch has already filed a report to look into it.

Good news is, the graffiti's been cleaned up and the rock's mostly back to normal. Even with the damage, Thompson sees a positive side: it's brought the community together to talk about how important these sites are and how to protect them, especially since they mean so much to the Snuneymuxw First Nation.
