When Nail Care Becomes Comfort ❤️

Providing nail care for someone in the hospital is about so much more than simply trimming and shaping nails.

There are often many things to consider first:
🩺 What health conditions are we working around?
💊 Have there been any new medications?
👩‍⚕️ Do we have permission from the doctor or care team?
🏥 Am I permitted to provide services in this area of the hospital?
❤️ Is the client comfortable and well enough for the service today?

Safety always comes first.

And sometimes, it’s a family member who reaches out and asks for nail care or a gentle pedicure for their loved one.

Because when someone is in the hospital, so much can feel completely out of their control.

Their health. Their schedule. Their independence. Their daily routines.

But something as simple as having their nails cared for can give them a little piece of normalcy back.

A warm towel. Gentle care. A little conversation. Clean, comfortable hands or feet.

For a short time, they aren’t just a patient.

They’re simply a person being cared for. ❤️

Nail Care With Dementia: Patience First 💗

When caring for someone living with dementia, nail and foot care isn’t always as simple as booking an appointment and getting the job done.

Some days are good days. 💕
Some days are a struggle.
And some days, the kindest thing I can do is cancel the appointment and come back another day.

And that’s okay.

A familiar environment, gentle conversation, patience and kindness can make all the difference. Sometimes a client may be anxious, confused, tired, or simply not comfortable with having their hands or feet touched that day.

My goal is never to rush through an appointment just to get it finished. Their comfort, dignity and safety come first. Always.

Nail care for clients living with dementia takes more than skill—it takes understanding, flexibility and a whole lot of compassion. 🩷

Because sometimes the best treatment we can provide is simply saying:

“Today isn’t the day. That’s okay. I’ll see you another time.” 🌷

Understanding your Skin: Cleansing

Conventional cleansing strips skin of its natural oils, acid mantle, and microbial residents, then tries to replace what was lost with occlusive, synthetic ingredients. Foam, tightness, and sheen feel like signs of “clean” and “effective,” but they’re actually signs the barrier has been stripped away.

Over time, this drives barrier disruption, microbiome imbalance, and premature ageing, trapping clients in a cycle of product dependency they can’t step away from without a harsh detox reaction.

With advanced education with Esse, I have learned the approach is the opposite: cleanse only when necessary, and preserve what matters rather than strip and replace it. This protects the barrier, supports the microbiome, and reduces inflammation.

🕰️ Repairing damaged nails takes time…

This nail had a major bruise from dancing in high heels on New Year’s Eve. As it grew, the nail lifted and would’ve fallen off. I carefully removed the lift a little bit each month until it finally came off safely with no ripping or tearing that caused pain or further damage to the nail.

At this point the nail is crooked and needs to continue growing (about 1mm per month - yes, really 😳).

The solution for summer sandals is a nail reconstruction. I add gel-like special product which is designed for toes to create the top of the nail and straighten it out. No one would ever know it’s not her nail! 🤫
