If you have a spray tan on top of dead skin cells, guess what? When those dead skin cells slough off, your tan will go with them! So make sure to exfoliate a minimum of ideally 48 hrs before your spray tan appointment so that your spray tan has a smooth canvas to be applied to.

Here's a little history on how Spray Tanning/Fake Tanning came to be...

In the 1950s when a researcher at the University of Cincinnati named Eva Wittgenstein discovered the development process of spray tanning by accident. Her study focused on dihydroxyacetone (DHA) as an oral drug for assisting children with Glycogen Storage Disease. DHA is most frequently derived from plant sources such as sugar beets and sugar cane. While Eva was conducting her study, she noticed that when the medicine splattered, it stained her patient’s bodies, but not their clothes. Curious about its effects, Eva tested the solution on her own skin, and to her surprise, the same thing happened... her skin also turned brown within a matter of hours. Following some more vigorous testing, the solution was mass­produced by tanning companies such as Coppertone in cream form and have since evolved tremendously over the years!

For those who may not know... The Color you initially see after being sprayed is just the cosmetic bronzer component to your tan and is not the final result of your.

Depending on the percentage of the DHA you're sprayed with you will rinse off the bronzer anywhere from 4-8 hours after Spray. Your tan however continues to develop for 24 hours from time of Spray at which time you will see your final result ✨

Tan Tip Tuesday: Be sure to wash and condition your hair BEFORE you do your body exfoliation. This ensures that you remove any product residue that your shampoo or conditioner could potentially leave on your body which could cause your spray tan to streak. Ideally you should do this prep the day before your appointment. After you exfoliate and rinse, it's always a good idea to take a clean wet wash cloth (no product) and go over your body again. Finally, finish with a cool water rinse to help calm your skin. Happy Tanning!
