Part 3 – Becoming a family

Maria:

We met through mutual friends. Actually, I had two separate friends suggest within days of each other that I should meet Michael. That was 2019, and we were married in 2020.

I was working again at Cocoon and owner Michele offered Michael (who was working with a local downtown barber at the time) an opportunity to rent space next door to open a hair salon.

Michael:

One of the things that drew me and Maria together is our commitment to family. Family means everything to me. It always has. I grew up in a family business and my family continues to operate salons throughout Ontario (not affiliated with Hair by Michael Angelo).

Maria also grew up in a close, loving family and we want to share that kind of connection with our children and with our community.

Part 2 - How did two Islanders-by-choice (Michael from Ontario and Maria from Poland) end up running a hair salon here in PEI?

Michael:

I was turning 40, and looking for a lifestyle change. My father emigrated from Italy to Canada and I visit his homeland often. While still working in law in Ontario, I had an opportunity to come to PEI for a few months and I just knew this was home.

PEI reminded me so much of the place where my father grew up near the ocean. I gave up my fast-paced career for a new life as an Islander.

Maria:

I first wanted to come to PEI because I loved Anne of Green Gables!

I was working in a fast-paced environment, single and living with my parents. I wanted a change, and within a year after visiting PEI, with my cousin, I took a sabbatical from work, and began the application process to become a Canadian permanent resident. Within 10 months I received my PR cards.

I knew I found my new home.

Part 1 (of 3) - Introducing Michael and Maria

This is our fifth year in business, so we thought it would be a good idea to introduce ourselves, while at the same time welcoming you to our local family business.

Hi! We’re Michael and Maria Commisso and this is Dominic, 4, and Francesca, 6 months. We own and operate Hair by Michael Angelo, located in the Delta Prince Edward building in downtown Charlottetown, PEI.

Michael:

I grew up in Woodstock, Ontario in a family of hair stylists. When I was just 14 I started to apprentice in my family’s salon, and I earned my hair stylist certification four years later. I continued advancing my skills, training in Canada, Europe and the US.

After working in the hair styling craft since I was basically a child, I took a break, went back to school, and in 2012 I earned my membership with the Law Society of Ontario. I practised law for the next number of years, but after a while I realized that high-energy, high-stress life wasn’t the lifestyle I wanted.

Maria:

I grew up in Poland, and earned my degree at the University of Warsaw. I worked as an administrative assistant in a large corporation, but I knew I wanted more. My cousin was planning a trip to Canada, so I quickly made plans to join her.

After obtaining a work permit in PEI, I worked at a few local businesses, and then I got a job at Cocoon Wellness Spa , where I was inspired to train and become licensed as an esthetician.
