My name is Shanna Fortnum, and I am a licensed hair dresser with a multifaceted range of experience underneath my belt, including: participating in the Skills Canada competition in 2014, working as the volunteer Hair Stylist for Mercy Ships for six months in 2015, Salon work in between, and now I am self-employed, located at Sarah Carey's Home Salon in Cultus Lake. Excuse the lighting 🙄 Sometimes you have clients that let you in on the raw parts of their life. They let you in on the grief that consumes them by a loss of a family member. They let you see their tears. And so, it's necessary for you as a stylist to meet them there; to cry with them, to laugh with them; to rejoice in the small but very exciting victories, even if all it means is meeting a friend for lunch that week. It's especially necessary when they come in to the salon and insist on having an entire makeover that day. It's your job to drop your expectations for their hair-- to put down that tube of colour that was ready and waiting-- and give them the look they've "always wanted but never thought they could have". It's important to grow with your clients. It really is.
