✨ PCOS, Blood Sugar & GLP-1 Medications ✨

Did you know Ozempic and Mounjaro are medications that work through incretin hormones to help regulate blood sugar?

💉 Ozempic (semaglutide) is a GLP-1 receptor agonist.

💉 Mounjaro (tirzepatide) works on both GIP and GLP-1 receptors, making it a dual incretin medication.

So what does this have to do with PCOS? 🤔

Insulin resistance is common in PCOS and can affect how the body responds to insulin and regulates blood sugar. Over time, this can contribute to higher insulin levels and an increased risk of impaired glucose tolerance and type 2 diabetes.

GLP-1 medications can help improve blood sugar regulation by increasing insulin release when glucose levels are elevated, reducing glucagon, and slowing gastric emptying. They can also affect appetite and food intake.

For some people with PCOS, improving metabolic health and blood sugar regulation may be an important part of their overall treatment plan.

These medications don’t “cure” PCOS, and they aren’t appropriate for everyone. Treatment should be individualized based on your health history, metabolic health, medications and goals.

At Fox & Fir Wellness Co., Dr. Fox looks at the bigger picture of PCOS — including hormones, blood sugar, insulin resistance, nutrition and lifestyle — to help determine what may be contributing to your symptoms and what support may be appropriate for you. 🌿

Carbs aren’t all created equal — and how you prepare them matters. 🍞🥔🍚🍝

Fibre, processing and fermentation can all influence how quickly a carbohydrate is digested and how it affects blood sugar.

And here’s where it gets interesting: cooking, cooling and reheating starchy foods like potatoes, rice and pasta can increase resistant starch.

When cooked starch cools, some of it restructures into resistant starch (RS3), which resists digestion in the small intestine and behaves more like fibre. Some of that resistant starch can remain even after reheating.

The result? Studies have shown a lower post-meal glucose response with certain cooked → cooled → reheated starches compared with eating them freshly cooked.

It doesn’t make carbs “free” — it’s simply another example of how food preparation can change the way our body responds to food.

Why Does PCOS Cause Facial Hair Growth? 🤔

One noticeable symptom of PCOS can be new or increased facial hair growth — especially on the chin, upper lip, jawline, or neck. 🧔‍♀️

So, what’s happening?

PCOS can be associated with higher levels of androgens, including testosterone. These hormones can affect hair follicles, causing fine hairs to become thicker and darker. 🧬

This can lead to:

✨ Coarser, darker facial hair
✨ More noticeable chin or upper-lip hair
✨ Faster or more persistent regrowth
✨ Hair growth on the jawline, neck, chest, or abdomen

Insulin resistance can also play a role. 🔄 Higher insulin levels may contribute to increased androgen production and lower SHBG, leaving more testosterone available to affect tissues.

Androgen sensitivity matters, too. Two people can have similar hormone levels but very different hair growth because their follicles may respond differently.

Shaving, waxing, or plucking removes the hair, but doesn’t address the underlying factors that may be contributing to its growth.

Facial hair can be one piece of a larger hormonal and metabolic picture. 🔎

Not everyone with PCOS experiences hirsutism, and facial hair alone does not mean you have PCOS.

At Fox & Fir Wellness Co., Dr. Fox can help look at the bigger picture and explore what may be contributing to your symptoms.

Because sometimes the symptom isn’t the whole story. 🌿💚

ONE-POT LEMON HERB CHICKEN & RICE 🍋🌿

A bright, flavourful one-pot meal with tender chicken, basmati rice, green beans, sun-dried tomatoes, feta, lemon, and herbs. Easy, delicious, and perfect for a weeknight dinner!

Serves: 4–6
Cook time: 50–60 minutes
Oven: 375°F

INGREDIENTS

1 cup basmati rice, rinsed
1¾ cups chicken broth or water, plus extra as needed
3 chicken breasts or 6 boneless, skinless chicken thighs
3 cups fresh green beans, trimmed and cut into thirds
Zest of 1 lemon
Juice of 1 lemon
2 tsp dried dill
½ cup sun-dried tomatoes, diced
½ cup crumbled feta
3 cloves garlic, minced
2 tbsp olive oil
1 tsp salt
½ tsp freshly ground black pepper
Fresh dill and lemon, optional for serving

DIRECTIONS

Preheat oven to 375°F.
Add rinsed rice to a large Dutch oven. Add green beans, lemon zest and juice, dill, sun-dried tomatoes, garlic, olive oil, salt, and pepper. Pour in 1¾ cups broth or water and gently stir.
Place chicken on top and season with additional salt, pepper, and dill if desired. Sprinkle with feta.
Cover and bake for 50–60 minutes, or until the chicken is fully cooked and the rice is tender.
If the rice is still firm and the liquid has been absorbed, add ¼ cup hot broth or water at a time. Cover and bake for another 10–15 minutes as needed.
Let rest, covered, for 5–10 minutes. Fluff the rice and finish with fresh dill, extra feta, and a squeeze of lemon.
COOK’S NOTE:
You may need a little extra liquid depending on your Dutch oven, oven, and type of rice. Chicken breasts may need closer to 2 cups total liquid, while chicken thighs usually work well starting with 1¾ cups.

Autum’s PCOS Journey 🤍

My whole life, I’ve always been an active kid. I was involved in one or more sports and grew up with a healthy, balanced diet thanks to my mom’s knowledge and focus on overall health.

So, when I was eventually diagnosed with PCOS, it was something I wasn’t expecting.

A big part of my PCOS came down to genetics. Genetics can influence so many things about our bodies, and sometimes you can be doing “all the right things” and still fall short. That was my experience.

I was actually unaware that some of my symptoms weren’t normal. I thought not getting my period every month was just how my body worked.

I also experienced hormonal acne around my temples, forehead, back and chest, along with PMS mood changes. For me, that looked like increased irritability, feeling anxious more easily, and having more frequent mood swings.

I also didn’t have the classic PCOS symptom of weight gain, which is often associated with PCOS. That made it even easier for me to overlook what was happening.

Thankfully, I had my mom, Dr. Fox (highly recommend her, ladies and gentlemen 😉), who was able to recognize the signs and help me get the proper care.

Through a combination of a more balanced, personalized diet, a workout routine tailored to my body, and targeted supplements, I started noticing changes. My acne improved, my moods became much more regulated, I felt more balanced overall, and most importantly, I was able to get my period back.

It wasn’t just one thing that made the difference — it was the combination of nutrition, exercise, supplements, and finding an approach that was personalized to what my body needed.

PCOS can look different for everyone, and you don’t have to fit the “classic” picture to have it.

I’m so happy to share my story this PCOS Awareness Month because sometimes the symptoms we think are “normal” are actually our body telling us something.

🤍 Happy PCOS Awareness Month!
