Falling back in love with selfcare can be daunting and even something that seems like it will make a minimal difference in your life at the time. Coming from my own experiences I know this feeling all too well.

“I am too busy.”
“There isn’t enough time in the day.”
“ I just need to push through and things will ease up.”

These are all phrases I have used myself, but let’s cut through the bull… All these phrases did was allow me to lie to myself. Truth is I wasn’t actually “too busy” for selfcare. There was in fact time, and things actually didn’t “ease up” they just rolled into the next item on the to-do list.

It took years to realize the cycle that I kept finding myself in. The best thing I ever did was stop making excuses for self care. My thought process had decided that selfcare was limited to things like Spa days, massages, luxurious baths and just general expensive expenditures for “pampering.” Don’t get me wrong these things are amazing and we all deserve them but it is pretty impractical to believe they fit into our everyday lives.

Things I did do to start becoming more aware of myself and my selfcare needs were as follows:

1) I started going outside for my lunch break or even just for ten minutes to just get out and breathe fresh air during the work day.

2) I started prioritizing my to-do list and accepting that things on a low priority just weren’t important enough to trump time for myself or my friends and family.

3) I started making sure that I was more conscious about water intake and started realizing my dependency on caffeinated items to keep me going. I started titrating off of them and eventually found that a cold glass of water woke me up just the same as an afternoon coffee. Without the trouble of sleeping at night.

4) I started going to bed at a regular time. No more “Yes Netflix I am still here” moments. Just shut the tv off, put your phone on Do Not Disturb and don’t touch it again until your alarm goes off.

5) Last but not least, I began practicing being more present with others. Technology is so accessible and we often accidentally become disconnected from those right in front of us. I found that while I wasn’t trying to be rude, the habit of picking up my phone while talking to check emails, texts, and various other things really interrupted the conversations I was actually having. In a world where we have more ability to connect then ever you begin to feel lonely because the conversations are stuck in a small talk loop instead of physically engaging in the person's story. Changing this little habit brought a lot of new friendships and helped rekindle old friendships.

These of course were just a few things I started doing that didn’t actually take time out of my “busy day” they just became incorporated into it with ease and consistency.
