We have been seeing some back strain in many of our appointments due to the increase in shoveling last week. This is super common because we often go into shoveling with our muscles cold.
We can however minimize some of the strain on our body with a few key points…
- WARM UP before you start shovelling where you move your spine in 6 planes of motion: forward and backward bend, side to side bending and twisting left and right.
- ENGAGE YOUR CORE and keep your back straight. Think about pulling your belly button towards your spine to contract the abdominal muscles in a way that is supportive to your back. Don’t hunch over, but instead maintain a lengthened spine.
- USE YOUR LEGS. Think about your legs as the primary workers and your arms and torso as secondary helpers. Bend the knees, push the snow rather than flailing your arms to lift and instead, lift from the legs and try not to twist much when removing the snow.
- GO SLOW. When you rush this activity, and are not mindful of loading the body, that’s when we can get hurt! Take the extra 3-5 minutes to avoid an annoying back recovery.
Sending you love out there and enjoying this beautiful sunny, mild weather!!☀️

When it gets colder out, we automatically want to scrunch up our shoulders towards our ears and cave in our chest and hunch over. It’s a protection mechanism from the cold but it sure wreaks havoc on the muscles in our neck, shoulders and back. Try to wear extra layers surrounding your neck and chest in this cold weather and remind yourself to relax your shoulders down your back, relax your jaw and most importantly breeeeeeathe.

Let’s keep it simple. Just move. We notice how it’s often the stagnant positions like sitting for long periods at our desk all hunched over that create the most dis-ease, pain and discomfort in our bodies.
Don’t think you have time? We have gotten stuck down this way of thinking many times. But truly, we all have multiple windows of time, 5-10 minutes to periodically move… arm circles, hip circles, squats, plank, balance, neck rolls, cat and cow, lunges… simple movements that make all the difference.🙌🏻
What do your sneaky and quick movement breaks look like?

When we talk about core, we are talking about the centre of the body, not just the abdominals. The core stabilizes the trunk while the arms and legs move during functional movement (walking, running, throwing, lifting objects etc).
With core, we are looking at the balance of spinal mobility and joint stability, and also where the muscles of the hips, torso and shoulders all work together as we move. When your body works cohesively, the spine is more supported, which takes the pressure off the spine and allows you to move freely.
You of course use your core during many activities like in cross country skiing for example, but for core specific exercises you could look for ones that you perform in a controlled way like in pilates.
What are your favourite core exercises?
