Sciatica Oscillations!โฃ

When the nerves that leave the lower spine are irritated, it disrupts their flow of energy and causes โ€œsciaticaโ€, which is an electrical tingly feeling that travels from the low back and down the sciatic nerve, which is felt as sensations that go down to the foot. ๐Ÿซ ย #iykyk

If you continue moving your body poorly without connection to proper alignment, it can worsen and lead to symptoms such as weakening of the legs and feet, and even symptoms such as incontinence. ๐Ÿฅน Even surgery does not fix the root issue - it just trims off the side effects.

It is important that regardless of the state of your sciatica, you continue moving your body through its full range, and actively try to restore the range of motion that has been lost. ๐Ÿ—ฃ

This is a safe exercise to train with because the spine is unloaded. Hereโ€™s how to do it:

1. Begin on your hands and knees with your hands under your shoulders and knees under your hips.
2. Pressurize and depressurize your midsection throughout the rep (Week 1 - Level 1 Back & Core Program)
3. Extend your lower spine (Week 2 - Level 1 Back & Core Program)
4. Laterally tilt your right hip up (Week 4 - Level 1 Back & Core Program)
5. Flex your lower spine (Week 3 - Level 1 Back & Core Program)
6. Laterally tilt your left hip up and create rhythm and flow through all of the movements

I hope everyone has enjoyed a fun and safe summer and got to see all of your loved ones as we enter the final stretch of the season for most of us. Just a quick house keeping update on a few details that I've been meaning to reach out about!

Firstly, as restrictions were lifted in July, I have updated cleaning and screening protocols from โ€œCovid Protocolsโ€ to โ€œCommunicable Disease Protoolsโ€ available on my website at cortesislandrmt.com as per the College of Massage Therapists and the BCCDC. Like all public indoor spaces, masks are still required. The long and short of it is that not much has changed really! At this point, prescreening checks are informal and I ask you to complete those independently and needless to say, if you are sick or self isolating please stay home! With that said though, we will see how long these changes last..

Secondly, I have re-launched online booking for your convenience and mine! You can find this link on my website at cortesislandrmt.com.

A reminder that โ€œBenefit Seasonโ€ is fast approaching. September through December are undoubtedly our busiest months as RMTโ€™s as people try to use up their benefits for the year. If you are one of these people, I encourage you to start thinking about using some of them before November. Perhaps you would like to start booking a few maintenance treatments over the next few months by using my online booking system! Historically, I have added additional time into my December schedule to accommodate my patients. However, this year, I will be prioritizing spending time with my family for that magical time of year! So, if you find yourself scrambling at the end of every year to use up your massage benefits, I urge you to think ahead this year!

I think thatโ€™s all for now. May September bring us oh so much rain! :)

Warmly,

Sarah Robinson, RMT
