Transitioning From Chemical Relaxers To Natural Hair

What is Transitioning?

Transitioning is a phase many individuals go through when they no longer want to use relaxers or perms on their hair but don't want to do the big chop and cut off all the relaxed hair at once. It's a process of gradually growing out the natural hair while managing the two different textures and getting their ends trimmed regularly.

Why Transition?

Transitioning allows you to embrace your natural hair texture and regain control over your health. Relaxers and perms can cause damage and weaken the hair over time. By transitioning, you give your hair a chance to recover and grow stronger.

How to Start Transitioning?

The first step in transitioning is to stop using relaxers or perms. This means no more chemical treatments on your hair. Instead, focus on nourishing and caring for your natural hair. Use sulphate-free shampoos, deep conditioners, and daily moisturizers like leave-in conditioners, hair milk, or herbal tonics and seal it with pomade, a light oil, or mousse to keep your hair moisturized and healthy.

Managing Two Textures

During the transitioning phase, you'll have to deal with two different hair textures: the natural roots and the relaxed ends. This can be challenging, but you can make the process more manageable with protective styles. One way to manage the two textures is by using protective styles. Braids, twists, buns, and updos can blend the two textures and minimize breakage. You can also use flexi or perm rods to create curls that blend the two textures.

Trimming and Cutting

Regular trims are essential during the transitioning phase. Trimming the relaxed ends helps eliminate the damaged hair and prevent split ends from travelling up the hair shaft. Trimming your hair every 6-8 weeks is recommended to maintain healthy hair growth.

You can opt for the big chop if you're ready to fully embrace your natural hair. This involves cutting off all the relaxed hair and starting fresh with your natural hair. It's a bold move, but it can be liberating and empowering.

Patience and Self-Care

Transitioning is a journey that requires patience and self-care. It's important to be gentle with your hair and avoid excessive heat styling or harsh chemicals. Embrace your natural hair texture and celebrate every milestone along the way.

Remember to take care of yourself as well. Transitioning can be emotional, as it involves letting go of societal beauty standards and embracing your unique beauty. Surround yourself with a supportive community and seek inspiration from others who have gone through the same journey.

Empowering People of Color: Our Journey with Melanated Beauty DepotMy name is Shamaine, and I immigrated to Canada in Nov 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic. In late February to early March, we moved to New Brunswick. That's New Brunswick in Canada, not in New Jersey. When I moved to Canada with my husband, I didn't know what to expect, but I didn't think I would ever find myself living in a place where most people don't look like me. It was a culture shock for me, and what made it worse was not having access to haircare products or people who knew how to care for my hair. In the Southern US, hair is a part of the Black culture, and we take pride in keeping our hair healthy and styled. My momma did not play about my hair y'all, I don't know how often other kids got their hair done but, I grew up getting my hair done every two weeks.

Back to why I founded Melanated Beauty Depot (MBD), I grew tired of going to the local beauty supply store owned by a giant corporation that lacked in many product types of hair care products for my textured hair. I found that a lot of the products in the store catered to people with straight hair and people who enjoy coloring their hair. There is nothing wrong with that except that hair products for Black people only took up space on half an isle. Yes, this is a predominately White area, BUT much of the international university students and immigrants are descendants of the Afro-Diaspora. Therefore, I felt the least I could do is open a beauty supply store online because brick-and-mortar is too expensive for this small business' pockets and with these New Brunswick taxes, for now, and supply Black people (and all mixes of melanin-expressing folks alike) with hair care products they need in one place. At MBD, we understand that the hair struggle is real in rural areas, and we are procuring new products, day by day, to bring to our store to ship to your home.
