What is sun damage?

Sun damage is the direct link of extrinsic aging and UV exposure. With skin cancer aside, unprotected or poorly protected skin exposed to UV rays no matter the season will increase your instance of sun damage. Like skin cancer, Sun damage is cumulative meaning any damage from UV exposure will compound with previous damage already accumulated from UV exposure.

Types of Sun damage:
- Excessive freckling
- A tan or sun burn
- Pigmentation spots that never used to be there before
- wrinkling/crinkled skin
- laxity in the skin
- Redness and sensitivity
- Angiogenesis: increase in spider veins anywhere on the face and body but especially cheeks, chin and forehead.
- Increase in melasma
- patchy pigmentation that can look like poorly applied makeup or fake tanner without having used these products
- barrier issues
- sun damage can also be found on the corneas of the eyes.

These are only a few signs of sun damage that are visible. Depending on how early in life you’ve been spending long periods of time in the sun will determine how early you will see these signs but as a licensed esthetician I have seen these signs of excessive UV damage as early as 22-25 years of age.

Our skin is the result of our genetics and our environment and how we care for ourselves. The genetic component determines how rapidly your skin cells will divide and shed and how much oil your sebaceous glands will produce and when we have the perfect combination of both potentials we have the perfect environment for acne bacteria to thrive.

It’s important to understand that C.acnes bacteria is not inherently pathogenic when our genetic predisposition for a lack of oil or appropriate skin cell shedding doesn’t create the perfect anaerobic environment even though we all have C.acnes bacteria present in our skins natural microbiome.
