Now that the season for ice-cold root b**r is coming to an end…
~ but don’t worry, there are still a few Root B**r lip balms left if you can’t quite let it go yet! ~
…it’s time to welcome back the perfectly indulgent Hot Cocoa!
This isn’t just a “smells like chocolate” kind of lip balm. Hot Cocoa has a rich, creamy dark cocoa scent—not overly sweet or candy-like, but deep, smooth and wonderfully cozy. Like wrapping your hands around a steaming mug of hot cocoa, this scent is pure comfort.

A little behind-the-scenes peek at unmolding and hand-trimming each bar of dish soap!
When I first began, I used a simple handheld vegetable peeler and struggled constantly with controlling it well enough to trim the bars straight and not too deep.
My husband was listening to me lament another bad trim (again) when he said sometimes it’s better to bring the object to the knife instead of the knife to the object. I was skeptical that it would make any difference, but I grabbed our cheese grater (the one you see here, and the one I still use to this day) to try it… and it made all the difference in the world!
There’s definitely still a knack to trimming them this way, but it requires way less of a steady hand and pressure. I now find it to be quite a peaceful job, listening to some good music or just spending the time thinking or praying while my hands are busy with the methodical movements. I enjoy making the refill pucks look tidy for your beautiful dish soap bowls 🤍
And speaking of learning new things, our teenage son has expressed interest in starting to work for me, and this will be one of his first tasks to learn! So if you happen to get a slightly crooked refill puck in the next while, you can smile knowing you might just have a small piece of his learning process in your hands 😊

The current economy is wild, and I know I’m not the only one feeling it.
So I decided to put the whole shop on sale for the rest of September. Not because I need to have a big sale, but because I know that right now, a little bit of savings can be helpful.
🇨🇦 Maybe you’ve been wanting to make the switch to a Canadian small business, but trying new products can feel like a risk when you’re not sure they’ll stand up to the ones you’re currently using (don’t worry, they will!).
🏡 Maybe the start of Fall has you thinking about some more sustainable habits at home, but you don’t really know where to start.
🧴Maybe you’re trying to replace some of your body care products with good-for-you options, but are feeling overwhelmed trying to sift through all the clever marketing.
💸 Or maybe you’re just feeling the squeeze of the cost of pretty much everything these days, along with the uncertainty of how much more of a squeeze might be ahead, and would appreciate an opportunity to stock up on products you already know and love.
Whatever the reason, I wanted to make things a little easier.
From now until the end of September, everything in my online shop is 20% off, including my already reduced Perfectly Imperfect products.
There’s no code to remember. The discounted prices will automatically show up as you shop.
I really do want searl soap company to be a place where making thoughtful choices feels simple and possible 🤍

Taking a moment to remember Wendell Berry, who passed away today at 92 years old.
I have been inspired, challenged and reminded of such beauty and hope by this wise man over the years. I am so grateful.

A year and a half ago I made a really big purchase in hopes of taking a really big step forward in soap production efficiency.
What I didn’t expect is how long it would take to assemble and learn how to use them, incorporate them into my recipes (every change, no matter how big or small, always affects things beyond what I think it will), and troubleshoot unexpected troubles... including manufacturing errors!
These two shiny metal tanks, that look almost identical but are actually very different, are affectionately named Lyle and Coco 🤍
Lyle holds a bulk amount of lye solution I mix up ahead of time and Coco holds many kilos of coconut oil.
I am very happy to report they are now both fully functioning and beginning to help with that production efficiency I had hoped for! What absolutely boggles my mind is that I can quite easily work through a full tank of coconut oil in a week - WOW! Plus that gives me the added bonus of a free workout lifting and maneuvering numerous 18kg boxes of oil every time Coco needs to be refilled 😅
So, THANK YOU for continuing to choose searl soap company. Every order, repeat purchase, recommendation and kind word has played a part in getting me to where I am today — and watching this little business grow and thrive because of your support is something I never take for granted. I feel incredibly blessed to get to keep doing what I love, and to make these products for you.

If you’ve ever wondered how to pronounce “Searl” or why this little soap company is called that, you’re not alone!
Searl is my last name (Loni Searl), and I’ve always been rather fond of it. I remember seeing my future husband playing music at a local coffee shop and finding myself repeatedly looking at his name on the advertising poster — Conor Searl. There was just something about it that caught my eye… quite possibly the amazing man attached to it 🙂 But either way, I really do love our last name.
Conor is also self-employed and works from our home as a luthier, repairing stringed instruments. When he started his business, he simply called it Searl Guitars. So when it came time to name my new little soap company, after throwing around all sorts of ideas, I landed on Searl Soap Company.
I loved that it felt simple and personal, and that it connected my business to what my husband was already doing at home — which, fittingly, is where my workshop is as well.
Looking back, if I’d had the clear direction for my business that I do now, I might have chosen a name that said a little more about what I offer. But here we are, and things have grown far too much to change it now!
And as for how to pronounce it, it’s very simple: think of “pearl,” then swap the P for an S!

(And if you've also ever wondered how to pronounce my first name Loni, it's "LAW-nee", rhyming with Connie or Bonnie. I have one of those names that, although they're pretty simple, both my first and last has to be said clearly and also spelled out 🤪)

This review was written over a year ago now and Anamaria still LOVES the solid dish soap!
A few weeks ago, her family used up the last of their current dish soap puck and realized they didn't have an extra one on hand as usual… She told me she refused to buy another dish soap and made do with a dissolved dishwasher tablet until her box FULL of refill pucks arrived (see the second photo)! They should be set for life now 🤩
Thanks for helping spread the word Alex & Allegra 🥰

When I say "no added scent," it doesn't necessarily mean no scent at all...
My Unscented Solid Dish Soap and Stain Remover Bars truly don't smell like much of anything. But some of my other products with no added scent have beautiful natural aromas that come entirely from the ingredients themselves!
The Silhouette Goat's Milk Body Soap has a subtle yet delicious nutty, caramel-like scent from the addition of honey and finely ground oats, which are also wonderfully beneficial for your skin.
The Golden Hour Solid Body Balm and Au Naturel Lip Balm are both made with unrefined beeswax, giving them the subtly sweet, honey-like scent that so many people know and love. No added essential oils—just the natural aroma of real beeswax.
If you're looking to avoid added scent while still enjoying the natural character of thoughtfully chosen ingredients, these are some wonderful options!
