We’re seeing a shift in adolescent health—and it deserves our attention.
In recent years, our clinics have observed a noticeable increase in young teens presenting with Functional Neurological Disorder, often alongside autonomic nervous system dysregulation, anxiety, non-epileptic seizures, and depression.
What was once relatively uncommon is now becoming part of our everyday clinical reality.
There is no single cause—and it’s important we don’t oversimplify.
However, certain patterns are difficult to ignore:
• Increased social isolation
• Reduced physical and outdoor activity
• Prolonged exposure to screens and digital environments
• Limited meaningful, face-to-face engagement
From a neurophysiological perspective, this matters.
The developing nervous system thrives on movement, connection, sensory variety, and real-world interaction. When these inputs are reduced—or replaced predominantly by digital stimuli—we begin to see consequences in regulation, resilience, and overall mental health.
As healthcare professionals, our role goes beyond intervention.
It includes education. Prevention. Advocacy.
And as a community—parents, educators, clinicians, and leaders—we all share responsibility in shaping healthier environments for the next generation.
Sometimes the most powerful interventions are not complex.
They are simple, intentional acts:
Spending time.
Encouraging movement.
Creating space for conversation.
And fostering real human connection.
Because in many cases, what the nervous system needs most…
is not more stimulation—but better connection.
Let’s not wait to treat these challenges. Let’s work together to prevent them.
