“Can you make them a little shorter?”

Sometimes the answer is unfortunately no.

One thing that determines how short I can safely take your nails is your hyponychium.

The hyponychium is the skin underneath the free edge of your natural nail. For some people, it extends farther forward underneath the nail, especially if they naturally wear their nails longer (the Hyponychium helps support that length).

When this happens, taking the nail too short can mean filing or cutting into tissue that is still attached to the nail. This can cause pain, tenderness, bleeding, or injury.

So if I tell you, “That’s as short as I can safely go,” it is because I need to protect your natural nail and the tissue underneath it. 🤍

Everyone’s natural nail anatomy is different, and sometimes your shortest possible nail is determined by your hyponychium, not your preference for length.

✨ Shorter is not always safer, and your natural nail health comes first!
