This is exactly why I’m such a big believer in trial tans 👏🏼
This gorgeous client is going to be one of the bride models for an upcoming styled shoot at Aurora Valley Venue | Northern BC Wedding Venue with Alyx Andrekson | Wedding Planner & Coordinator and Wedding Photography & Videography BC & 🌎 — and since I’ve never tanned her before, I wanted her in my studio for a trial first.
Not only did it give me the chance to see how her skin takes colour and make sure we choose the perfect shade for the shoot… it also gave us a chance to work out a few prep details beforehand.
Like maybeeee not shaving your legs immediately before your spray tan 😂
For a shoot like this, there will be multiple photographers capturing and editing her in their own style, different lighting, different settings — so I want her tan to enhance her skin without overpowering her or photographing too warm, too dark or unnatural.
And this is something I tell my clients all the time:
Your wedding tan, Mexico tan, winter tan and everyday/event tan should not necessarily be the same tan.
The perfect colour depends on your skin, undertone, what you’re wearing, the lighting, the event, how you naturally tan and so much more.
That’s why a custom spray tan is so much more than choosing light, medium or dark — and why for the really important events, a trial is always worth it. 🤎

If your spray tan artist only asks “light, medium or dark,” then she’s not creating a truly custom tan.

One of the biggest misconceptions about wedding spray tans is that your bridal tan should be the same shade as your vacation tan.
They serve two completely different purposes.
Vacation? Go as bronzed as your heart desires. ☀️
Your wedding day is different. The goal isn’t to be as dark as possible—it’s to create a glow that enhances your natural beauty. You still want to look like you when you look back at your wedding photos 20 years from now.
That’s why I always recommend a bridal trial. It gives us the opportunity to find the perfect depth, make any adjustments if needed, and ensure you feel completely confident before the big day.
The one thing I keep in mind is the overall balance of the bridal party.
If the bride is going for a soft, natural glow, I won’t recommend one bridesmaid go darker. In photos, our eyes naturally gravitate toward the darkest person in the group. Instead of noticing the bride, the dress, and all the beautiful details, the tan can become the first thing people notice.
My goal is for everyone to look like the best version of themselves while creating a cohesive, timeless look that photographs beautifully.

Fitness girls, this one’s for you.
One of the biggest myths I hear is:
“I work out too much to get a spray tan.”
Not true.
With the right solution, proper prep, and good aftercare, you can absolutely have a gorgeous tan while keeping up with your workouts.
My biggest tips:
✔️ Prep & aftercare should be 100%
✔️ Dust drying powder onto high-friction areas (under the sports bra, inner thighs, underarms, etc.) to reduce rubbing
✔️ Pat dry after sweaty workouts.
✔️ Avoid long, hot showers.
Your tan should fit your lifestyle—not the other way around.
