It was so fun reading all of your guesses for Mateo’s breed! If you guessed Dales Pony, you nailed it! Mateo is a very special horse in many ways, and one of them is that he belongs to the rare and powerful Dales Pony breed. As described by the Dales Pony Society: “The combination of strength, agility, thrift, hardiness and high courage, with good conformation and a calm, intelligent nature, makes the Dales Pony a first-class riding and driving pony with all the abilities of a true all-rounder.” The breed originated in the Dales area of England, where they were used to transport mining materials. In World War II, the ponies played a vital role on farms at home as well as in the army transporting supplies. They came close to extinction at this time, but were brought back in a monumental effort by a few devoted breeders, and efforts to preserve this critically endangered breed are underway to this day.
