Sucker Creek First Nation invites community members to join a meaningful Our Hair Is Sacred Workshop with Chanelle Larocque.

Chanelle will share teachings about why our hair is sacred, the stories it carries, its connection to who we are, and the importance of keeping these teachings alive for future generations.

This is an opportunity to learn, listen, reflect, and reconnect with teachings that have been carried forward through generations.

This weekend I had the honour of bringing the Our Hair Is Sacred workshop to the North Peace Tribal Council Culture Camp, alongside my braiding sidekick, Denecia.

For two days, we braided, shared, learned, laughed, and connected. But this workshop is about so much more than learning how to braid.

We talked about the sacredness of our hair and the teachings behind it including why we don’t allow just anyone to touch our hair. Our hair carries more than we can see. When someone touches our hair, they can unknowingly bring their own energy and intentions into our space. Learning to honour our hair is also learning to honour ourselves, our boundaries, our culture, and our ancestors.

And then, on the very first day of Culture Camp, we were visited by an eagle. 🦅 To have that beautiful connection to the land, right as we gathered to share these teachings, felt like confirmation that we were exactly where we were meant to be. One of the members even painted a drum featuring the bald eagle that visited us and captured that moment perfectly. 🪶

And as if that wasn’t already enough, we were gifted our very own drums. 🥹🤎 What an incredibly meaningful gift to receive and bring home with us. I’m so grateful for the generosity, kindness and love that was shared with us throughout this experience.

I’m so grateful to the North Peace Tribal Council for inviting us to be part of their Culture Camp, and to everyone who joined us, trusted us with their hair, shared space with us, and welcomed these teachings.

And huge shout out to my braiding partner Denecia Taylor ☀️ two days of braiding, teaching, connecting and creating memories together. I couldn’t have asked for a better friend. 🤎

Our hair is sacred. Our teachings are sacred. Our connections are sacred.

This year was my third year braiding hair at the Sturgeon Lake Cree Nation Pow Wow. What a beautiful weekend filled with so many special moments. I’m so grateful to have been a part of your regalia, your outfit, your visit or your memories. I hope my braids continue to shine happiness and light in your lives. I’m so thankful for those of you who allow me to braid and touch your hair. I promise to always braid with intentional loving hands.

I’m so excited to be back at the Sturgeon Lake Cree Nation Pow Wow offering hair braiding services! 🪶

Nimosôm (my grandfather) is from Sturgeon Lake, so this community has always held a very special place in my heart. The people here are family, friends, and some of the very first people who supported me when I began my braiding journey. 💕

I’m so grateful that braiding has brought me back to my community and given me the opportunity to connect with so many amazing people along the way.

I’m so excited to be a part of this amazing initiative supporting the youth in our community! 💛

For two days, myself and two other Journeyman Stylists will be coming together to provide haircuts for youth getting ready to head back to school. ✂️✨

It’s such a privilege to be able to use our skills to give back and help our young people feel confident, fresh, and ready for the school year! 🥰
