I hear this from almost every bride I meet — and honestly, I get it. Nobody wants to feel like they’re wearing layers of makeup on their wedding day. But let’s talk about what “cakey” really means…

Cakey makeup usually happens when the skin isn’t properly prepped, or when too many products are layered without balance. It’s not always about how much makeup is used — it’s about how it’s applied.

As a bridal makeup artist, my entire focus is on creating that filtered IRL look — makeup that feels light, looks flawless up close, and lasts all day through the tears, kisses, and dancing.

With the right prep, products, and techniques, you can have coverage and glow — without ever looking heavy.

When we create our wedding glam timelines, there’s one thing we always prioritize: making sure the bride is finished with hair and makeup with plenty of time before getting dressed, photos, or the ceremony.

Because wedding mornings rarely go exactly as planned 😅

Hair runs behind. Someone needs a touch-up. A dress needs steaming. The bride gets pulled away for photos, details, family moments, or simply trying to soak it all in. And before you know it, timelines can start shifting quickly.

That’s why we put the bride in the middle of the timeline.

When the bride is done in the middle of the timeline, it creates breathing room. There’s time to relax, get dressed properly, do touchups if needed, and actually enjoy the morning instead of feeling rushed.

And trust me — after 400+ weddings, we’ve learned that even the smallest unexpected thing can impact the timeline.

Whether it’s adjusting hair from humidity, last-minute touchups, or simply giving the bride an extra moment to breathe before walking down the aisle… buffer time matters.

Making our timelines now, we only put the brides time slot in a specific place and the rest are just makeup and hair, that way we are not waiting on anyone specific during that time. This will allow us to move through the timeline without hold ups. We will work through the timeline based on who’s there first, other then the bride.

As bridal artists, part of our job is protecting the timeline and protecting the bride’s experience.
