Tips when purchasing tallow skincare

With tallow skincare products on the rise as the next revolutionary natural skincare product, there are a few things to look for when deciding where to purchase from.

If purchasing in Canada, products need to be registered with Canadian food act and cosmetic regulations. This is something that is often overlooked. This is a health and safety regulation put into place by health Canada for the publics safety to ensure all ingredients used are safe. Along with proper registration of cosmetic products it’s important that proper labeling is adhered to. The seller must label and list all ingredients on every product.

A consumer safety feature to look for is products that are sealed to prevent tampering and contamination.

It’s important to ask the seller what type of tallow they are using. Tallow can come from many different species of animals. Beef tallow is derived from beef fat through a rendering process, and it can be sourced from two primary areas: suet and trim fat. Suet is the hard fat found around the kidneys and loins. It is much higher in natural vitamin D, vitamin K, vitamin A (bio available retinol), omega 3’s, omega 6’s and is high in conjugated linoleic acid. Grass fed suet is a yellow/orange colour while grain fed is white. The yellow tint comes from higher levels of beta-carotene. Both turn a creamy white colour once rendered to cosmetic grade. Trim fat is the softer fat that comes from other parts of the animal, typically the discarded fat that has much less benefits for skin but is good for cooking. Heavenly Heifer uses the finest locally grass fed beef suet.

Also a as buyer, decide weather essential oils are desired compared to infused botanicals. Do some research into benefits for skin on each of these products. Essential oils are usually added to tallow products to mask a beef smell with little to no skin benefits. (If it’s actually suet from around the kidneys and rendered properly there should be no beef smell). Infused botanicals are used for each of there individual benefits for skin.


Be sure the seller is knowledgeable in combining formulas. With magnesium tallow on the rise the seller must use a preservative and emulsifier as magnesium is only water soluble and not fat soluble. In order for the magnesium to absorb into our skin it must be completely dissolved.

Tallow and honey are another formula that should have a preservative due to honey being made up of water and sugar. Honey is not a preservative for oil. If you add honey to tallow which is an oil without a preservative you are formulating a breeding ground for bacteria and mold which you may not see before it’s to late and applied to your skin. It’s not the honey that will spoil but the tallow. Here’s how:

Microbial Spoilage:

Oils and Fats are mainly TRIGLYCERIDES ( a glycerol molecule bound with three fatty acids).
They are hydrophobic and pure oil should not have moisture.
Microorganisms can not utilize triglycerides as such.
If there is enough moisture, then there are lipolytic microbes, which can release enzyme: LIPASE.
Lipase will react on the glycerol-fatty acid bonds, and free fatty acids.
Which can be assimilated by microbes to bring about spoilage
Anything containing water, this includes honey and magnesium oil, must have an emulsifier and a broad spectrum preservative.

-Beeswax is not an emulsifier
-Vitamin E is not a preservative and if not used with correct percentage can be harmful to your health
-Arrow root is not a preservative
-Magnesium is not a preservative and does not dissolve in oil
- Some carrier oils should not be use as they go rancid quickly with oxidation (eg. grape seed oil)

Remember, You cannot see bacteria and mold spores with the naked eye and it can be dangerous if you apply to your skin.
