A good hair braid depends on how you hold your fingers, Sylvain Belleros explained, holding up two digits as he worked on a mannequin head.
“So what it does, it allows me to really tighten this out,” Belleros demonstrated, crossing the strands trailing through his fingers into a properly-shaped braid.
Belleros, a Level 5 hair designer from Milica Salonspa in Walnut Grove, was coaching dads with daughters how to style their girls’ hair at a ‘Beers and Braids’ workshop, held at the Mad Italian pizza restaurant in Willoughby Town Centre on Sunday, May. 17.

“Some wonderful dads are taking initiative to connect with their daughters,” Belleros remarked.
“I think it’s an amazing thing to do, doing something that’s very uncomfortable and not considered very manly. To have that courage to be in a vulnerable state for their daughter, it’s very rewarding.”

It was the first time for the event in Langley, organized by Walnut Grove resident Shaun Magee.

“It’s just a bunch of fathers getting together,” said Magee, who recalled his own experience as a suddenly-single divorced dad with a young daughter.
“I had to go online and I did courses on how to braid, and most of my stuff was unsuccessful,” Magee laughed.
Beers and Braids is part of a global trend that began in the UK when some pubs began hosting beginner-friendly father-daughter hair-braiding classes, to help fathers feel more confident taking part in everyday caregiving tasks often associated with moms, such as doing their children’s hair.
That was the goal for Vash, one of the dads at the Langley event.
“My daughter has a lot of messy hair, so I wanted to do [her] hair for her so she feels nice about it,” Vash smiled.
In addition to step-by-step demonstrations, dads had their first beer for free.
Mad Italian owner Fred Rizae saw the event as a good fit for his establishment.
“I thought it was such a cool spot for us to host and be able to bring out all the dads with their daughters to create an inviting, warm atmosphere, which is what we’re very well known for.”
