Osteoarthritis: What do people get wrong?
🦴 Think osteoarthritis is simply a result of “getting old”?
Think again.
📈 A 2023 study published in Healthcare looked at health-seeking behaviours and misconceptions surrounding osteoarthritis. The findings highlight the importance of improving public understanding of OA and when to seek appropriate care.
Here are a few important things to know:
❌ “Osteoarthritis is just wear and tear.”
OA is more complex than simply a joint “wearing out.” Many factors can contribute to its development and progression.
❌ “If I have OA, I should avoid exercise.”
Movement and appropriately prescribed exercise can play an important role in managing symptoms and maintaining strength and function.
❌ “Pain means I’m damaging my joint.”
Pain and tissue damage don’t always go hand in hand. A physiotherapist can help you understand your symptoms and determine what types of movement and exercise are appropriate.
❌ “I just have to live with it.”
There are evidence-informed strategies that can help people manage symptoms, improve function, and stay active.
💪 Your joints were made to move. Physiotherapy can help you understand your pain, build strength, improve mobility, and develop a plan that works for your body and your goals.
If joint pain is keeping you from doing the things you love, don’t just push through it, get it assessed.

Wrist Stretch: Flexors & Extensors
Experiencing wrist or forearm tightness? These two simple stretches can help gently mobilize the muscles around your wrist.
🤲 Wrist Flexor Stretch
1. Hold your arm straight out in front of you with your palm facing up.
2. Keeping your fingers straight, gently bend your wrist down toward the floor.
3. Use your opposite hand to gently deepen the stretch by pressing on your fingers.
4. Hold for 10–20 seconds, then release.
✋ Wrist Extensor Stretch
1. Hold your arm straight out in front of you with your palm facing down.
2. Keeping your fingers straight, gently bend your wrist down.
3. Use your opposite hand to gently press against the back of your hand to deepen the stretch.
4. Hold for 10–20 seconds, then release.
💡 Try 3–5 sets of each stretch, up to 3 times per day.
REMEMBER!
A stretch should feel gentle and tolerable, not painful.
Do not force the movement. Start with a comfortable stretch and gradually increase it over time. If you feel pain, back off the stretch.
⚠️ Wrist pain can have many different causes, so these exercises may not be appropriate for everyone. If your pain persists, worsens, or you’re unsure which exercises are right for you, speak with a physiotherapist or healthcare professional.

❓MYTH OR FACT?❓
The Truth About Nightshades & Arthritis
MYTH: “If you have arthritis, you should avoid nightshade vegetables because they increase inflammation.”
FACT: There’s limited scientific evidence that nightshades worsen arthritis symptoms. 🌱
Nightshades include:
🍅 Tomatoes
🥔 Potatoes
🍆 Eggplant
🫑 Bell peppers
🌶️ Paprika & cayenne
These foods contain compounds called alkaloids, but research has not found evidence that the nightshades we commonly eat worsen joint inflammation. (Arthritis Society Canada)
In fact, nightshades can provide fibre, vitamins and antioxidants that support overall health. Some compounds, such as lycopene in tomatoes and capsaicin in peppers, may even have potential anti-inflammatory benefits. (Arthritis Society Canada)
BUT WHAT IF THEY BOTHER YOU?
Everyone responds differently to food. If you notice your symptoms consistently worsen after eating a particular food, keeping a food + symptom journal can help you identify patterns.
Rather than automatically cutting out an entire food group, consider discussing your concerns with a healthcare professional or dietitian.
The bottom line: 🌿
You don’t need to automatically eliminate nightshades because you have arthritis. Focus on your overall eating pattern, not one individual food.
Go, nightshades, go! 🍅🌶️🍆

Back-to-School Posture Check!
💻 Back to school means more time studying, sitting at a desk, looking at screens, and carrying backpacks.
✏️ But did you know that prolonged poor posture can affect more than just how you look?
🥼 Research suggests that posture can have a significant relationship with our muscles and other musculoskeletal structures.
📈 A recent review of research from 2014–2024 found that posture has a direct relationship with various anatomical structures, highlighting why the way we sit, stand, study, and move throughout the day matters.
A few simple ways to support your body this school year:
✨ Change positions regularly rather than staying in one posture for hours
✨ Take movement breaks throughout the day
✨ Set up your desk and screen comfortably
✨ Avoid carrying a backpack that is unnecessarily heavy
✨ Prioritize movement and exercise outside of study time
✨ Remember: there is not one “perfect” posture, movement variety matters!
Your body was not designed to stay in one position all day. Keep moving, keep changing positions, and listen to what your body needs.
