Petition to pilot training in the Dave Elman hypnosis induction for NHS staff

To the Secretary of State for Health and Social Care

We call on the Department of Health and Social Care to work with NHS England to fund and evaluate a pilot training programme for suitable healthcare professionals in the Dave Elman hypnosis induction as an additional technique for helping patients manage pain and anxiety.

Patients may experience significant distress during painful procedures, wound care and treatment for persistent pain. Clinical hypnosis may help some patients, but the effectiveness of the Elman induction in NHS settings needs direct evaluation. We ask for a carefully designed pilot, rather than an assumption that one method will work for every patient.

The pilot should:

1. Offer voluntary training to appropriately qualified NHS staff, with clinical supervision and clear standards of practice.
2. Use the technique only with informed patient consent and alongside appropriate medical assessment, anaesthesia and pain relief.
3. Define which patients and clinical settings are suitable, including when hypnosis should not be offered.
4. Measure pain, anxiety, patient experience, staff time, costs and any adverse effects against an appropriate comparison group.
5. Publish the findings and consider wider training only if the results show meaningful benefit and acceptable safety.

This proposal would give NHS staff another potential tool for supporting patients while producing the evidence needed for a responsible decision about its wider use.
