Massage Myth Monday.

Myth: One massage will fix years of tension.

Truth: One massage can provide noticeable relief, however, lasting changes usually take time, consistency, and a personalized approach.

Over months or years, we can develop Muscle tension, repetitive movements, stress, and injuries. A massage can help reduce tension, improve mobility, and give your body a chance to reset, but long-term improvement often comes from a personalized treatment plan.

Small and consistent steps can make the biggest difference over time.

Wellness Wednesday: Hydration and Muscle Health.

Your muscles need support too, and hydration is part of that support.

Water plays an important role in how your body functions, including circulation, energy levels, and muscle performance.

When we aren’t drinking enough fluids, we may notice things like feeling more fatigued, reduced energy, headaches, or our bodies feeling a little more “stiff” than usual.

Your body works hard for you, give it the resources it needs to keep going.

Hi, I'm Alan, the therapist behind Phoenix Down Therapeutic Massage.

I graduated from the Massage Therapy program at Medicine Hat College in 2013, and have spent the last several years helping clients manage pain, improve mobility, support recovery, and feel more at ease in their bodies. Every treatment is tailored to the individual and may incorporate techniques such as myofascial release, dynamic cupping, and instrument-assisted soft tissue mobilization (IASTM), depending on each client's needs and comfort level.

Education has also been an important part of my career. From 2019 to 2022, I taught, trained, and mentored massage therapy students at the Southern Alberta Institute of Massage, an experience that deepened both my knowledge and my passion for helping others grow.

I believe people achieve the best outcomes when they understand their bodies and feel involved in their care, rather than simply being treated and sent on their way. Living with rheumatoid arthritis myself, I understand the challenges of chronic pain and day-to-day physical strain. That experience has shaped the way I approach treatment, with patience, adaptability, and the understanding that no two bodies respond in exactly the same way.

My goal with Phoenix Down Therapeutic Massage is to create a space that feels calm, professional, and welcoming, a place where people feel supported, listened to, and genuinely cared for.

When I'm not in the treatment room, you'll usually find me tinkering with my 3D printer, relaxing with a video game, or spending time with my wife and our two cats, Finnegan and Daphne.

If my approach sounds like the right fit for you, I'd love to help. Book your next appointment at www.phoenixdown.noterro.com or give me a call at (403) 548 -1946.

Perfect posture isn’t the goal, awareness is.

Many of us spend hours sitting, driving, working at a desk, looking at screens, or repeating the same movements every day. Over time, our bodies naturally find positions that feel comfortable, but those positions can sometimes contribute to stiffness, fatigue, and tension when we stay there too long.

Instead of trying to hold yourself in a “perfect” posture all day, try checking in regularly:

Relax your shoulders away from your ears
Unclench your jaw
Place both feet comfortably on the floor
Take a slow, deep breath
Gently move your neck and shoulders

Small adjustments throughout the day can make a big difference in how your body feels.
Try it right now, what did you notice when you checked in with your posture?

Massage Myth Monday.
Myth: Deep tissue massage is always the best.

Deep tissue massage can be helpful for chronic muscle tension, certain injuries, and restricted movement, but it's not the best choice for everyone.

A successful massage isn't measured by how much it hurts, it's measured by how well it helps you move, recover, and feel afterward.

The best treatment isn't the deepest treatment, it's the one that's right for your body.

Small signs are worth paying attention to.

Our bodies are constantly communicating with us, but we often don’t notice the signals until they become harder to ignore.

A little neck stiffness, a tight jaw, achy shoulders, headaches, or feeling more tired than usual can all be signs that your body is carrying extra stress or tension.
The goal isn’t to wait until something hurts enough to slow you down. Building awareness and responding early can help support your body before discomfort becomes your “normal.”

Where do you notice stress or tension showing up first: your neck, shoulders, back, jaw, or somewhere else?

Myth: Massage is only for relaxation.

Truth: Massage therapy is about more than just relaxation. Registered Massage Therapists use evidence-informed techniques to help reduce muscle tension, improve mobility, relieve pain, support recovery from injuries, and manage the physical effects of stress.

Every treatment is tailored to your unique needs and goals, whether you're recovering from an injury, managing everyday aches, or looking to move more comfortably. While relaxation is often a welcome benefit, improved function and feeling your best are what keep many people coming back.

Did you once think massage was only for relaxation? What changed your mind? comment below.
