Moving to Canada is a major milestone, but your first few weeks are just as important as getting your visa. Taking the right steps early can make settling in much easier.

Here are some of the first things every newcomer should do:

✅ Apply for your Social Insurance Number (SIN) – You’ll need a SIN to work legally in Canada, receive government benefits, and access certain services.

🏥 Apply for your provincial health card – Healthcare is administered by each province, and some provinces have waiting periods, so apply as soon as you’re eligible.

🏦 Open a Canadian bank account – Many banks offer special newcomer packages with no monthly fees for a limited time and other helpful benefits.

📱 Get a Canadian phone number – Having a local number makes it easier for employers, schools, landlords, and service providers to reach you.

🚗 Apply for or exchange your driver’s licence – Depending on your country of origin and the province you live in, you may be able to exchange your licence instead of starting from scratch.

💻 Create your CRA (Canada Revenue Agency) account – This helps you manage your taxes, check your benefits, and receive important government updates.

🎒 Register your children for school – If you have school-aged children, contact your local school board early to begin the registration process.

📬 Update your address with IRCC (if required) – This helps ensure you receive important immigration documents and correspondence without delays.

💳 Start building your Canadian credit history – Consider getting a credit card and paying your balance on time. A good credit score can help when renting a home, financing a car, or applying for a mortgage.

Ontario has officially opened its new immigration portal! 🎉

Starting August 4, eligible candidates can now submit an Expression of Interest (EOI) under Ontario’s new Workforce Priority Stream.

✅ Here’s what you need to know:
• Job offer pathways are available across ALL NOC TEER categories (TEER 0–5).
• Eligible self-employed physicians can also apply through a dedicated pathway.
• This could be a major opportunity for many skilled workers hoping to settle in Ontario.

⚠️ Important: Submitting an Expression of Interest (EOI) does NOT guarantee that you will receive an Invitation to Apply (ITA) or a provincial nomination. You must still meet all eligibility requirements, and Ontario will invite candidates based on its selection criteria.

📌 Who is eligible?
✅ Skilled workers with experience in occupations needed by employers in the region.
✅ Applicants who receive a job offer from a designated employer in one of the participating communities.
✅ Candidates who meet the education, language, work experience, and settlement requirements of the program.

📌 Priority occupations and sectors include:
• Healthcare
• Skilled trades
• Manufacturing
• Transportation
• Agriculture
• Hospitality and Tourism
• Other occupations experiencing labour shortages in the region.

📌 How does the application process work?
1️⃣ Secure a job offer from an approved employer in one of the participating communities.
2️⃣ The community assesses whether you meet its eligibility and settlement requirements.
3️⃣ If selected, you receive a community recommendation.
4️⃣ Apply to the Manitoba Provincial Nominee Program (MPNP).
5️⃣ If nominated by Manitoba, you can apply to the federal government for Canadian permanent residence.

Not every Canadian province can nominate immigrants the same way.

While most provinces and territories have their own Provincial Nominee Program (PNP) to select skilled workers who meet their local labour needs, Quebec operates its own separate immigration system through provincial selection programs, and Nunavut does not have a Provincial Nominee Program.

Here’s a quick breakdown of the provinces and territories with their own nomination programs and the general eligibility requirements:

1) Alberta (AAIP) – Skilled work experience, language requirements, and a genuine intention to live and work in Alberta.

2) British Columbia (BC PNP) – Usually requires a job offer, relevant work experience, language proficiency, and qualifications for the occupation.

3) Manitoba (MPNP) – Strong ties to Manitoba (family, previous work/study, or invitation), skilled work experience, and language ability.

4) New Brunswick (NBPNP) – Job offer or invitation through provincial recruitment, language proficiency, and relevant work experience.

5) Newfoundland & Labrador (NLPNP) – Eligible job offer, education, work experience, and language requirements depending on the stream.

6) Nova Scotia (NSNP) – Skilled work experience, language proficiency, and eligibility under one of the province’s targeted streams.

7) Ontario (OINP) – Job offer or Express Entry profile (depending on the stream), education, work experience, and language requirements.

8.) Prince Edward Island (PEI PNP) – Job offer, work experience, language ability, and intention to settle in PEI.

9) Saskatchewan (SINP) – In-demand occupation or job offer, education, work experience, and language proficiency.

10) Yukon (YNP) – Valid job offer from a Yukon employer and meeting the requirements of the applicable stream.

11) Northwest Territories (NTNP) – Employer-driven nomination, relevant work experience, education, and language ability.

12) Quebec – Does not participate in the Provincial Nominee Program. Instead, it selects immigrants through its own provincial immigration programs with separate eligibility criteria.

💡 Remember: Every province has multiple streams with different requirements. A job offer is required for some streams but not all, and many streams are linked to Express Entry while others are not.
