SMUDGY TIE DYE NAILS TUTORIAL by Drop Dead!

This nail design is inspired by one of my favorite dresses, a yellow and purple tie dyed maxi dress. You don't have to use the same color palette as I did. You can use as few as 3 colors but I wouldn't do much more than 8 or 10 at the maximum. You could use a monochrome palette, but make sure you have enough variety in in brightness or saturation of color or you'll end up with an indistinguishable blob.

1. Start with fresh, clean nails. Put on a base coat to protect your nails.

2. Apply 2 thin layers of a base color, allowing adequate time between layers for drying. It is best to use the lightest and brightest color in your palette so that it doesn't drown the other colors when they go on top. In my design I used a bright, shiny yellow.

3. Place a few drops of ALL of your palette colors on a sheet of paper, including the color you used as your base.

4. Use either a small piece of cosmetic sponge or a spongy eyeshadow applicator (as pictured). Dip it into one color at a time, dabbing off the excess so that there's a thin coat on the sponge.

5. Doing one nail at a time, sponge small amounts of each color onto the nail. Alternate between colors, blotting the sponge between colors to try to clean out the sponge. Patching it together, cover the entire nail with a thin sponged coat of all your colors. Make sure to get the sides of the nails. It is okay if you sponge outside the lines onto your skin, we'll deal with that later.

6. While the sponged later is still wet, begin applying a clear top coat. Run the brush over the design over and over until the polish on the entire nail has smudged together.

*Note: this kind of smudging with top coat is useful in a lot of designs, but it might tint your top coat a tiny bit. I keep a specific bottle of top coat for this sort of work.

7. Repeat the same process on each nail.

8. Using a coton bud dipped in nail polish remover, clean up the polish on your skin around each nail.

And there you have it! A smudgy tie dye nail design!

Just as an FYI, here's the specific colors that I used:
Essie - Grow Faster Base Coat
Revlon Top Speed - 305 Electric (Yellow)
Essie - Play Date (Purple)
Essie - Mezmerised (Blue)
Essie - Tart Deco (peach)
Essie - Da Bush (light green)
Essie - Good to Go Top Coat

HAPPY NEW YEAR FROM DROP DEAD! Expect some awesome new stuff from us in 2013! In January I will be introducing 3D NAIL ART (including gold studs, glitter lace and gems) and I am hoping to start doing GEL/SHELLAC by the spring! WE THINK 2013 IS GOING TO BE AMAZING!!!!!

12/30/2012

I have decided to start making tutorials on how to do some easy nail art designs at home! I just posted the first one. I am hoping to get to the point of making videos eventually :)

Tutorials! 12/30/2012

1. Use a base coat to protect your nails

2. Put two thin layers of any color on all nails, allowing at least 5 minutes between coats for adequate drying. I used a metallic gold by Orly and added some Essie Luxe Effects Gold As It Gets glitter on top just for some extra oomph.

3. Using a striper dipped in white polish, create small starbursts in the corner of each nail. To do this begin with the tip of the brush pressed firmly in the corner and swipe diagonally across the nail with a flicking motion. Repeat from the same starting point, heading outward in rotated degrees until you have a feathered starburst. This white starburst will be an excellent base for the colors we will put on top, something to help them pop!

4. Once the white is FULLY dried, use a toothpick lightly dipped in your first accent color and gently drag it across the nail in the same motion and location used to make the white starburst. Do this lightly so that the color looks like feathery scratches and covers most but not all of the white. For my first color I used an Emerald green.

5. Let the first layer dry until slightly tacky and then repeat step 4 using your second color. For the second color, use slightly less so as not to completely cover your first accent color or the white. For my second color I used a royal blue.

6. Allow a few minutes to dry slightly, but before the accent colors are completely dry, put on a healthy top coat layer, starting from the center of the starburst. This will smudge the colors slightly and blend them together as well as create a sealant to protect your design.

Voilà!

Polishes that I used:

Quo by Orly “Filthy Rich”

Essie Luxe Effects “As Gold As It Gets”

Rimmel London “French White Tip Pro”

Revlon Top Speed “330 Emerald”

Revlon Top Speed “730 Royal”

Essie “Good to Go” Top Coat
