10 Canadian Facts You’ll Want to Share Today 🇨🇦

Today is all about celebrating this beautiful country we get to call home — so here are 10 fun Canadian facts you can share at the BBQ, beach, fireworks, or family get-together today. Happy Canada Day from all of us at Mehron Salon! 🎆

1. Canada became a country on July 1, 1867.

That’s when Ontario, Quebec, New Brunswick, and Nova Scotia came together to form Canada. So yes — today really is Canada’s birthday.

2. Canada Day used to be called Dominion Day.

The name officially changed to Canada Day in 1982, the same year Canada brought its Constitution home from Britain.

3. Our flag is younger than many Canadians.

The red and white maple leaf flag was first raised on Parliament Hill in 1965. Before that, Canada used different flag designs, including the Canadian Red Ensign.

4. “O Canada” started as a French Canadian patriotic song.

The music was composed by Calixa Lavallée, and the original French lyrics were written by Sir Adolphe-Basile Routhier in 1880. The English lyrics we know today are based on a version written by Robert Stanley Weir in 1908. It officially became Canada’s national anthem on July 1, 1980.

5. Canada has two official national sports.

Hockey is our official winter sport, but lacrosse is our official summer sport — and lacrosse has deep Indigenous roots.

6. Hawaiian pizza is Canadian. 🍍🍕

Love it or hate it, pineapple on pizza was created in Ontario by Sam Panopoulos in 1962. A very Canadian contribution to dinner-table debates everywhere.

7. Winnie-the-Pooh has Canadian roots.

The real “Winnie” was a bear named after Winnipeg. A Canadian soldier, Harry Colebourn, brought the bear to England, where she later inspired the famous Winnie-the-Pooh stories.

8. Basketball was invented by a Canadian. 🏀

James Naismith, who was born in Ontario, invented basketball in 1891 while teaching in Massachusetts.

9. Canada is a freshwater giant.

Canada has the world’s longest coastline and is home to a huge share of the world’s freshwater, lakes, wetlands, and boreal forests. We really are lucky to live in such a beautiful place.

10. And this year, Canada made soccer history. ⚽🇨🇦

Canada reached the World Cup last 16 for the first time ever after a dramatic 1–0 win over South Africa, with Stephen Eustáquio scoring in stoppage time. What a moment for Canadian soccer!
