Schools Plus is one of the most important resources we have in Pictou County. They are literal heroes. What they do for our kiddos and families is live changing and life saving. We’re so lucky to get to partner with them on these projects ♥️

Who are you: Jill Hennick, SchoolsPlus Facilitator Pictou County West

Program name: Fun Day 2024!

School /Community Organization/Location: 40 students from multiple schools in Pictou County grades 6-9.

What are you doing: Bringing together kids from various communities in Pictou County for a day filled with fun and creativity! From crafting and karaoke to board games, tie-dye, and even getting their nails and hair done, it’s a celebration of youth and imagination. This special event is the result of a wonderful partnership with Chelsea Sutherland of Chelsea Laine Hair Salon and Colour Bar. Last year, Chelsea reached out with a generous offer to provide free haircuts to local youth, and in true SchoolsPlus style, we thought—why not make it a whole day of giving back and community fun?

SchoolsPlus facilitators work to foster community partnerships like this one, creating unique opportunities and connections for kids in Pictou County schools.

What is its purpose: Fun Day is a chance for youth from across the county to come together, connect, and have a great time!

In smaller communities, social opportunities can be limited, transportation often presents challenges, and face-to-face interactions have become increasingly rare as kids and youth spend more time on their phones and social media. This event provides a valuable opportunity for young people to engage in person, build connections, and have fun outside the digital world.
