Why Olive Oil Is a Staple in Soap Formulation 🧼
Olive oil is one of the most commonly used oils in traditional and modern soap making, not because it’s trendy, but because of how it behaves in a well-designed formula.

From a chemistry standpoint, olive oil is high in oleic acid, a fatty acid that produces a soap that is:
• Mild and gentle on the skin
• Highly conditioning
• Low-cleansing (won’t overly strip natural oils)
• Smooth and creamy in feel

Olive oil soaps are often associated with Castile soap, which shows just how durable and skin-friendly this oil can be. However, olive oil on its own creates a bar with low bubbles and can take longer to harden and cure.

That’s why formulation matters.
When blended with other oils, such as coconut oil for cleansing and bubbles, or hard oils like cocoa butter, palm, or tallow for structure, olive oil really shines. These combinations help ensure:
• Better lather and bubble stability
• Increased bar hardness
• Improved longevity in the shower
• Balanced cleansing without dryness

In short, olive oil provides the conditioning backbone of a great soap recipe, while complementary oils round out performance.

This year, I’m especially grateful for everyone choosing to shop local. When you support my small Canadian business, more of your dollar stays right here in our community, helping neighbours, families, and fellow makers thrive.

From the bottom of my heart, thank you for choosing local over big-box and for believing in the people behind the products. Your support truly makes a difference.
