Before tattooing became my medium, there were ten years of dance, an art school I kept returning to after graduation, a watercolour I was told to destroy, one university application, years of academic training — and a camera.

These are the things that shaped me as an artist.

1. I first performed on a big stage when I was four. Ten years of dance taught me discipline, repetition, body awareness and how to express something without words.

2. Art school became a place I didn’t want to leave. The program lasted four years, but after graduating I kept coming back for another year and a half simply because I loved being there.

3. Once, I spent weeks trying to save a large watercolour that wasn’t working. My teacher made me tear it up, take it outside, throw it away — and start again. It taught me that time already invested is not a reason to keep something that doesn’t work.

4. By my final year of school, art had taken priority over everything else. I prepared for my entrance exams in an artist’s private studio and applied to exactly one university: the Academy of Arts in Lviv. I placed first on the admission list for a government-funded place.

5. Years of academic drawing, painting and composition taught me how to observe. Film photography later changed the way I understood light, framing, texture, imperfection and a single captured moment.

6. Tattooing eventually brought all of it together: drawing, photography, anatomy, movement, patience and working with another person. The older I get, the less interested I am in simply making a beautiful image. I care more about how an image belongs to a body — how it moves, where it begins and ends, and how the composition changes with the person.

I guess none of it was really separate. It all became part of the same language.
